Win2k dialup networking monitor problems

As it completed the install I set it up for dialup since I can't take my DSL with me. NOW every time I use the dialup connection I get this large box called dialup networking monitor and it freezes on the screen. The tabs don't work, the buttons' don't work and the screen shows a drop down box that doesn't drop down....and it shows something about a LPT1 connection. I did not do an advance configuration on the install and just opted a "typical" setup. I checked the add/remove components and I do not have direct cable connection installed or anything else that I could see that would possibly involve file/printer sharing. I can connect to internet...but that dang box freezes there on screen, only way to get rid of it is to do a close from the task bar...or when it completely freezes I have to try a graceful restart...or sometimes a hard restart. This is aggravating me to no end and I have never seen this feature.
I understand this monitor is usually present with WinNT systems when you have networking components installed beyond the usual home dialup settings. I've searched and all I can seem to find at Microsoft and other places seems to bring me to pages concerning WinNT and none as yet seem to refer to the problem I am having. I do see under Networking protocols that Microsoft client is showing but it is certainly not enabled and neither is file/printer sharing.
To make this even stranger is.... I thought well heck, why not cause myself more trouble and attached a printer to the computer and try and install it. WRONG! Nothing but problems now, and I did not even get to the point of installing a driver....cause of the problems that started occurring. I have removed printer cable from LPT1 but guess things went too far. Backed up went back to the day b-4's image backup. So NOW I am back to where I was b-4 attaching a printer cable....and I can get online most of the time and work...if I can get the dialup networking monitor to close from the task bar before it sits on top of desk too long.
Whew! Any ideas other than a stick of dynamite?

I hate to tell you how many times I have done that...as well as a number of other things.
This morning I decided to delete the LPT1 port. NOW the blasted Network Monitor shows that the device monitored is my modem on com 3. It does log stats...BUT it is still frozen on screen otherwise.
You can't access any tabs or close it unless you do so from the task bar or in alot of cases from task manager or a hard boot. When you close the dial up connection it shows a disconnect on the log but still sits on screen not moving.
I am logged in as administrator...and I have no other users...and all policies should allow me to do anything, including close the friggin thing. I checked all registry entries for startup, run keys, etc.
I have even started up in safe mode as well as started up with all startup, run once, etc entries disabled. It has no effect and pops up whenever I connect to dial-up.
I have even deleted all registry entries related to netmon*.* and net monitor. These were under IE /MRU folders. This was not a good idea...but of course I was prepared for problems and restored the backup reg. I was able to connect to dialup and the dang monitor popped up regardless...but I was unable to connect to a web page or mail...which I expected. Anyway, that didn't work.
Then I searched for any *.inf files and found a few interesting ones that might be related.
Thinking of tinkering with some of those....also thinking of installing the Windows component "Management and Monitoring tools" just so I can then uninstall it....LOL. And YES I have checked....I did not install that when I did my install. I have installed Win2K more than 20 times, on a variety of computers ( I build custom PC's for friends and do tech support for local folks) and this is one I've not ever seen. My son now works in the computer tech field ( I taught him everything he knows ) and he has never seen this either. The tech department for the ISP hasn't seen this problem. I've searched Online support as well as the internet and everything I find seems to point to this as being something one specifically installs....and on NT machines. I'm stumped so any ideas about something I might have missed...please add...I am getting punch drunk searching and trying things running back and forth from this computer to the one with the problem. I've spent days and nights reading alot of documents and so far nothing quite fits.
