Win2k lockup for 3 seconds

This is a discussion about Win2k lockup for 3 seconds in the Windows Software category; i got this strange lockup when just doing my stuff with win2k. after a certain time the computer pauses for like 3 seconds and everything stops to work: sound, HD light stands still, mouse is locked.

i got this strange lockup when just doing my stuff with win2k. after a certain time the computer pauses for like 3 seconds and everything stops to work: sound, HD light stands still, mouse is locked...
i once had a mem manager in my system where i could see the actual memory load.
before the lockup it was usualy above 6 MB and after the lockup it was like 60 MB.
is that some kind of memory management ?
i mean a computer cant lockup just because it frees memory (not even the HD does noises while it hangs). i hope some1 could help.
its pretty nasty when u burn cds and the system stands still for 3 secs which causes a buffer underun...

well mostly my file manager win commander,
several mircs, my firewall. thats about it.
the problem occurs most of the time when i open another program (any). this also happens when i have no application opened.
 
the config is
K7 600
FIC SD11
128 MB RAM
ADAPTEC 2490U2W (burner and castlewood ORB)
IDE HD (NTFS5), IDE CDROM
SBLive
ISDN card
ELSA ERAZOR III
