Windows XP Messenger (Can't disable it on bootup?!)
This is a discussion about Windows XP Messenger (Can't disable it on bootup?!) in the Windows Software category; How can I disable MS Messenger??? I tried to run msconfig and went to startup to disable msmsgs. exe and I also disabled Messenger from the SERVICES Tab. I'd like to just get rid of this damn thing if it's possible.

in the windows\inf folder there is a file called sysoc.inf in that file there is the word HIDE, delete that word from the file anyplace its in there (easy just to open it in notepad and do a replace HIDE with nothing) and then go to add/remove windows components and it will give you the option of removing it, and some other things.
Using regedit go here:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1644491937-1935655697-854245398-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
The 'S-1-5-21-1644491937-1935655697-854245398-1003' part might not be the same.
In that folder - delete the key MSMSGS. That should dtop it from loading when you login as that user.

yeah but why do that when my way lets him install and uninstall it. My way works better and is a shitton easier than regediting.
Look at the post times. I didn't see your post when I made mine...
Your method is better. You win!

Umm.....
Messenger has this great feature called OPTIONS. If you select OPTIONS from the TOOLS menu, and hit the PREFERENCES tab, this is what you should see this:
Just clear that box next to the "Run this program when Windows starts" and all your problems are solved. It will not start when you log into WindowsXP.

Thanks guys.
By the way, I didn't ever load up Messenger to be able to see the Options. That's how much I love MS Messenger hehe. But thanks anyhow. ;(
