Hi everyone,
I have problems getting a Windows Me machine to connect to my windows Xp machine through a simple LAN. There are NO DOMAINS or anything funky like that. The machine refuses to connect to my workgroup! For some reason it thinks the workgroup is "not available" even though my windowsXp machine connects to his machine effortlessly! HELP!

thanx.

PS: I'm running my NETBOS over TCP/IP as clutch has suggested!

As you can see I do NOT see any specific machine IPs but my own's. HOWEVER, I have no problem connectiong to other machines on the netowrk (apart from it taking literally forever!). Its the WIndows ME machine that fails to recognize the workgroup that I'm on. The workgroup's name is pearljamrox btw.

Oddly enough:
A.) NETBIOS IS enabled over TCP/IP
B.) My computer is configured to use DHCP/dynamic IPs, so it must be the college ISP! (I'm in a college dorm LAN).

Ok, I'll do that. I just un-installed all protocols/service except TCP/IP and i gotta restart before I can re-install them. I thought maybe If i re-build my network connection it may help or something!
I'll try it as soon as i restart. I'l let you know of what happens!

Yes, File and Printer sharng IS installed, and so is the client. Also, the Ping DOES work. The XP machine can see all other machines, but not vice versa!

Unfortunately I can't do that. I am browsing a college network consisting of multiple workgroups. The best I can really do is get information from my machine, and one other windows Me machine (the troublesome one) since it's my room mate's! So, the two machines on the "pearljamrox" workgroup are "kosher" so to speak. lol
By the way, the XP machine can now "see" the other machine, but if it attempts to connect ot it it returns an error message saying i do not have persmission or the "server hasn't been started"! I'm just as pissed at you and i need a good night's sleep which i can't have if this problem doesn't get fixed!

No no no! you got me allwrong. "kosher" was a figure of speech. What i CAN do is get you the ipconfig /all on both machines that are under the "pearljamrox" WORKGROUP. Is that ok?

Oh by the way, so you have MSN/AOL/ICQ/Y! etc... this is getting intoa conversation, so it'll be better if we can send IMs, don't you think?

Quote:Change it to "Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP Server" instead of "Enable NetBIOS over Tcp/IP"... on BOTH machines! AND, tick off the "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" checkbox too!

How do you do this in Windows Me? I've already done it in XP. I looked under TCP/Ip settings and they don't seem to have such an option there

Why would you have someone disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP? That doesn't make any sense, as I thought he was looking for NetBIOS name resolutions, and he doesn't have an NT server hosting DHCP or WINS.

Ok, went into computer management / services + Applications. All it does is lists a set of running services and processes. the firewall service is not clearly labelled. any ideas?
