If your system isn't detected as ACPI complient, you will have to go into power control panel and enable APM power management.
Had to do this for a friends computer to enable auto turn off.

Huumm ! I am an idiot or there is no "enable APM power management" checkbox ?
is there an APM tab in the power control panel. Also check if you are even using APM power management.
