WinXP - Explorer locks up when right clicking
XP recently on a number of PCs I look after (mostly HP Vectra VL420) lock up Explorer when you right click on a file (any file) to copy or do advanced options to it in either My Computer or Windows Explorer.

This is really getting annoying, especially when I want to edit scripts or copy/move files.
The machines in question have got SP1 installed and most of the hotfixes.
Thanks in advance.

Additions to APK's suggestion include ....
1. System restore point to when the system didnt have this sympton
2. Reapply SP1
3. Start / Run / "sfc.exe /scannow" (without the quotes)
4. Event Viewer Logs
5. Running Regmon and Filemon to pinpoint the exact references of the files and registry keys called upon the right click to see if there is a corruption.
6. Tried a different mouse ?
g'luck
Wow ... the last time this happenned to me was when I upgraded a NT Server to 2000 .... PSS suggested for us to restore from backup.

Well, i'd say i have a different vision about it; maybe eny of those suggestions work for you, but on my workplace, they're reseller of HP, COMPAQ.....products, so we have to deal with this Pc's, most of them HP pavilion, and we noticed that whenever we right click on desktop, it took forever to open the submenu.
At this point you'll ask me how did we solved this issue, well, we didn't want to spend much time with this refurbished Pc's, so a fresh installation, without those app's that brings the pc from the manufacturer, solved the problem for Us. Ain't the easiest way, but still good, just in case.

I had a similar problem when i installed a particular application that came with Toshiba DVD-r/w drives. uninstalling it solved the problem immidiately. it could be just one application (i know ATI Hydravision has caused this problem once, and NVIDIA nVIEW does this as well. Uninstalling Hydravision and disabling nView does the trick).
good luck
good luck
