Oops forgot to add...
For ripping the .VOB from DVD to Hard Drive I use Smart Ripper.
Becuase I can Demacrovison and make it region free while doing it.
To encode the ripped movie/vob files to VCD/SVCD/DIVX I use DVDx2.0
( This is what I use mainly, but I have used many others)
Now there are many others out there like VirtualDub, Flask, TMPGenc, ect.. Read up on some sites, and figure out what would work best for your setup. Each program has thier pros and cons, but it all depends on what you want your final video to be either a avi/divx avi or mpg.
Have fun and good luck..
