XP low level CDrom calls during game startup

Hi,
I've got most of my games working with XP now - most very easily. However, I have a few which all suffer from the same problem. These are Screamer 2, Screamer Rally and Championship Manager 2. Each of these fails to start either because it waits for ever with a "Please insert XXXX CDrom message" on the screen or it fails to find the CDrom and bombs out. I'm running VDMsound (which is excellent by the way) with the mscdexnt line uncommented in autoexec.vdms.
Almost certainly these problems are caused by these games trying to do a low level read on the CDrom. Is there any fix or low level emulation for XP for this?
Incidentally, I notice from the ntcompatible lists that Screamer 2 is said to be ok. This isn't my experience - has anyone else got it going?
Thanks,
Mark Parsons
