Zip 650 USB CD-RW=WTF!?!?!

Someone help me out here. Okay, my main system is having problems recording audio and other stuff onto CD-Rs but doesnt hiccup at all when recording to CD-RWs. Regardless of being audio or data cd's, it still puts out a buffer underrun problem, and gives me another coaster.

Someone help me out here.

Okay, my main system is having problems recording audio and other stuff onto CD-Rs but doesnt hiccup at all when recording to CD-RWs. Regardless of being audio or data cd's, it still puts out a buffer underrun problem, and gives me another coaster.

My secondary system is recording flawlessly on CD-Rs so far.

My first system specs: Duron 800@1GHz, Asus a7v bios 1007, 384MB PC133, toshiba 12x dvd, samsung 48x cd, maxtor 5400rpm hdd 20.4gb ata100. 2nd system: P3 667@700MHz, Tyan Trinity 400, 320MB PC133/100@100MHz, Western digital 17.2 gb ata 66 5400rpm, wd 2.5gb ata 33 4500rpm (where I record my songs from), toshiba 6x dvd.

The first system uses only Win2k, the second dual boots between Win2k and ME, but the recording is only done under Win2k. Software is Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02, and Adaptec Direct CD 3.01c.

Ive tested different cd-rs and regardless of what Ive used, 80min/700mb or 74min/650mb, it still does the buffer underrun. Ive used Sony and Fujifilm CD-Rs and it doest work on my main system. I know it worked before.
Ive disabled the Anitvirus scanner and other apps, but it still does it on the main system.
As Im putting this out, my P3 is pumping out a CD-R of Incubus right now on the sony cd-r.

Any help, because it records onto cd-rws just fine.

Make sure you have auto insert notification off. Try running Duron at regular speed if that doesnt work, might be getting hot or something

Just my 2 Cents

I dont think its heat, because the duron hasnt hit above 50 C. If it were heat, Id be locking up everytime I fired up UT and other games.
Im wondering if the software got screwed up.

I did think of something: no matter what capacity of CD-R Id put in, and it was more than enough, it would be ejected with a message that it didnt contain enough space. I clicked retry, and it started to record, but then of course, it would screw up.

This only happens with CD-Rs, not RW's on my duron.

My P3 doenst give me any errors whatsoever.

Could the software be the problem?

are the Rs and RWs buring at the same speed?? If the RWs are only burning at say 2x and the Rs are burning at 4x then try turning it down to 2x and see. I dont think it is software but try another program and see if it is that, also the latest version of EZ CD Creator is 4.03 so try upgrading to the latest version. Also resintall your ASPI layer. Other than those options i couldnt tell ya.
**edit**
After re-reading your post i would say that your software sounds like it is f-ed up. So try a reinstall of EZ CD Creator or try using something like cdrwin or nero.

I burn the RW's at 4x. All the media is rated to at least 8x or higher. I am gonna try it at 2x and see what happens. Im also gonna try the software that came with my little bro's sony supressa drive and see if that does anything.
I'll try the ASPI deal too, and possibly a reinstall. But I am getting fed up with EZ-CD crap. All my other software runs just fine, execept for this one.
Ive heard Nero is good, so I might try it out and go from there.
Thanx for the info.

I use nero, cdrwin and EZ cd creator sometimes. Im not a big fan of external USB cd-rws because the transfer rate on USB isnt really high enough to keep a constant stream going at high burn rates. If you have an internal IDE bay i would recommend taking the burner out of the case and putting it in your computer all the external drives ive seen are just internal IDE drives with a case on the outside to make them work as external.

Okay, the stupid thing will record cd-r's at 2x but not at 4x.
And last time I recorded rw's, they burned at 4x. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggghhhhh!!!!!! What have I done to anger the tech gods?!!!!???!
I tried Nero, but still the same damn thing happened!

Well, so far this is the worst thing that's happened to me. I'll just wait until Win2k screws up royally somehow and I have to reformat it for the fix.

I may try reinstalling the Via 4-in-1's to see if that does anything. I dont have anything to lose anyway.
