Rambus formally launched its chip-to-chip interconnect, codenamed "Redwood", and has positioned it as the physical interface over which next-generation buses will be run.
Rambus provided an overview of the technology last month, when the company disclosed that Sony would be using the technology in next-generation entertainment products, without specifically naming the PlayStation.

The nine companies promoting Blu-ray Disc technology--a next-generation recordable DVD format using blue-violet lasers--announced Thursday that licensing will begin Feb. 17. Blu-ray Disc technology allows for 27GB storage capacities on a single-sided 12cm disc. DVDs hold 4.7GB of data. Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Sony and Thomson are known as the "Blu-ray Disc Founders" and have been pursuing a broad acceptance of the format.

As of this week, DVD X Copy, a 321 Studios application recently reviewed by PC Magazine, is readily available from the 321 Web site and many popular retailers, including CompUSA and Fry's. But if seven of the leading movie studios have their way, this won't last long. On April 25, in US District Court for the Northern District of California, Judge Susan Illston will hear a motion from the seven studios claiming that 321 Studios two products (DVD Copy Plus and DVD X Copy) are illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and should be removed from the market.

SAN JOSE - Following on the heels of its dual-channel Rambus-enabled chipset, Silicon Integrated Systems Inc. officials confirmed that SIS is developing a four-channel model set to sample later this year.
The SIS R659, the sequel to the SIS dual-channel R658 chipset, is set to sample in the third quarter, according to a SIS spokeswoman. A formal announcement is due "very soon", the SIS spokeswoman said, but later amended her statement to say that the R659 may be announced after the Chinese New Year next week.

Users of Intuit's TurboTax income tax preparation software are up in arms as a result of new DRM features which were added, with no warning, to this year's product.
According to media reports, the company has incorporated a "product activation" feature, similar to those used by Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows XP, which may prevent the program from being moved from one computer to another. The copy protection scheme, a Macrovision product called SAFECAST or C-Dilla, can also cause problems if hardware is upgraded. Should a user replace his or her hard drive or upgrade to a new computer, he or she may not be allowed to print a return or prepare an amended return.
