This article describes how to change the Windows XP product key in a Volume Licensing installation.

Because of changes in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows XP-based computers that use a leaked product key that is known to be available to the general public may not be able to install SP1 or automatically obtain updates from the Windows Update Web site. For example, you may experience the symptoms that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article when you install SP1:

Microsoft is set to deliver Windows XP Service Pack 1, a set of bug fixes, feature upgrades, and technical tweaks, to manufacturers sometime "in the next 10 days," said Charmaine Gravning, product manager with Microsoft's Windows division. Users will eventually be able to download it or purchase it for $9.95 on a CD, soon after manufacturers get their hands on it, Gravning said.

Microsoft Corp. is expected to release the first service pack for Windows XP sometime next week.

Sources close to the Redmond, Wash., software company told eWEEK on Wednesday that SP1 could be made available as early as next Tuesday, immediately after the Labor Day weekend.
