OC Workbench send words that Intel plans to launch Celeron 1.2GHz in Q4 2001

In the fourth quarter, Intel plans to launch a 0.13-micron-processed Celeron CPU of 1.2GHz clock speed, aimed at the lower-priced clone and retail desktop PC markets.

The company began development of the 0.13-micron process technology-based product under its desktop Tualatin project in the middle of last year and has developed a Mobile Tualatin CPU for notebook computers by employing the same technology. Intel has scheduled to launch the Mobile Tualatin in the third quarter.

With 0.13-micron processing yield being 40% higher than that of 0.18-micron processing and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) not expected to master the technology until the third quarter of next year, Intel has effectively placed itself in a comfortable lead. Now the company intends to use the 1.2GHz Celeron and Mobile Tualatin as its killer products to push AMD out of both the low-priced desktop and notebook PC markets, while deploying 1.8GHz Pentium 4s in the higher clock-speed CPU market.
