20 of the Worst PC Setups - July 2017

I'm sure at some point you've had a bad PC setup.  Maybe moving into a new place, waiting for a new desk to arrive or you just ran out of room.  I can remember my horrible PC setups from when I was living at the dorms in college.  If you have ever ventured over to the Shitty Battlestations sub-reddit you will find a lot of horrible PC setups.  We will are going to pick 20 each month and feature them as 20 of the Worst PC setups for that month.  Here are some of the bad ones from May.

AMD Ryzen 3 1200 & Ryzen 3 1300X Linux Performance

At the end of July AMD began shipping the Ryzen 3 entry-level Zen processors. While it may not be as exciting as a 16-thread Ryzen 7 or Threadripper, the Ryzen 3 1200 and Ryzen 3 1300X offer surprising value with being quad-core parts priced at just above $100 USD. With Linux users especially craving multi-core systems if running Arch or other distributions where you are frequently compiling your own packages, the Ryzen 3 CPUs can make for a low-cost but practical Linux system. Here are my initial benchmarks of these first two Ryzen 3 processors.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Unboxing and Installation

We were expecting a board and processor like normal, but we ended up receiving two large boxes that tipped the scales at 55 pounds! This was not going to be your average board and processor! One boxed included a large pelican case with the AMD Ryzen Threadripper logo and a plaque that custom engraved for the site. The other box included ...

ASUS ZenBook Deluxe 3 UX490UA Review: A Striking, Slim Ultrabook

ASUS has earned high praise over the years for its ZenBook line of ultraportables. They marry sleek ultrabook designs with generally good value.

The ASUS ZenBook Deluxe 3 UX490UA is the big brother of the UX390UA we previously reviewed. It is, essentially, the same laptop bumped up from a 12.5-inch display to a 14-inch display. It’s got the same overall design signature and major features. The machine even comes with a similar carrying case. It’s available in Royal blue and Quartz Grey.

We found a lot to like about that smaller 12.5-inch model, along with a few caveats, and most of that holds true of this larger model...

Corsair One Pro 1080 Ti Compact Gaming PC Review

Just scant days after the announcement that EagleTree Capital bought a majority share of the company, Corsair sent us over one of their new One Pro 1080 Ti gaming system to check out. Unfortunately, we had some delays in the process and were only able to spend a few days with it before the launch so no huge in depth analysis here, but we got enough hands-on time to give it a fair evaluation. It’s got some of the best parts available crammed into a relatively small package that’s visually dazzling. As a follow up to their original Corsair One that was well received in the industry, they’ve upped the ante a bit with some minor upgrades in this iteration. I’ll relieve any suspense up front by saying it’s a kick ass system but I’m pretty sure you could tell that just from the specs and pictures alone and if not, maybe this video will help.

HP SSD S700 PRO Solid State Drive Review

HP suggests top speeds up to 565 MB/s for reads and 520 MB/s writes from SSD S700 PRO, which utilizes 3D NAND to deliver impressive storage density and reliability. Adding to its appeal is the cost of solid state technology, which has doubled its storage capacity per dollar from just one year ago. In this article for Benchmark Reviews, we test the HP SSD S700 PRO (SATA 2.5″ 512GB model 2AP99AA#ABL) against other solid state drive competition.

ZOTAC GTX 1080 Ti MINI Review

In the spotlight today we have the ZOTAC GTX 1080 Ti MINI. Touted as the world's smallest GTX 1080 Ti, this graphics card has a footprint unlike any of NVIDIA's flagship designs. Measuring in at just 211mm in length, compared to rival offerings (which in some cases exceed 300mm) this card will squeeze into the smallest of mini-ITX chassis and although gamers to take advantage of the highest performance available.
