20 of the Worst PC Setups - May 2017

I'm sure at some point you've had a bad PC setup.  Maybe moving into a new place, waiting for a new desk to arrive or you just ran out of room.  I can remember my horrible PC setups from when I was living at the dorms in college.  If you have ever ventured over to the Shitty Battlestations sub-reddit you will find a lot of horrible PC setups.  We will are going to pick 20 each month and feature them as 20 of the Worst PC setups for that month.  Here are some of the bad ones from May.

ASRock Demos X399 ThreadRipper Motherboards: M.2, U.2, 10 GbE, & More

At Computex last week, ASRock demonstrated two motherboards designed for AMD’s upcoming ThreadRipper HEDT processors. The new platforms are for high-end workstations and designed to support up to four graphics cards though the 60 PCIe lanes from the CPU, over a dozen of storage devices and up to eight DIMMs. To a large degree, ASRock’s motherboards reflect overall positioning of the AMD X399 “ThreadRipper” platform as a premium high-end desktop play, and what to generally expect from makers of mainboards here.

ASRock plans to offer two motherboards for AMD’s ThreadRipper CPUs: the X399 Professional Gaming and the X399 Taichi. The mainboards are based on the same PCB (and the same AMD X399 chipset/socket), but have a slightly different feature set. The ThreadRipper motherboards that ASRock demonstrated at Computex featured an eight-phase digital CPU VRM, which is the feasible limit given the physical space available, but we have no idea the capabilities of the power delivery as of yet. ThreadRipper is meant to be a high performance, high power processor, so undoubtedly the motherboard vendors have built their boards to match. When it comes to the socket itself, it has 4094 pins and is very large (not surprising given its origin). Weve seen the socket referred to as SP3r2 and TR4, although the official word from AMD is that it is the X399 platform.

Intel Core i7-7740K Kaby Lake-X Cracks 7.50 GHz on Liquid Helium

TeamAU with GIGABYTE OC Lab successfully overclocked an Intel Core i7-7740K "Kaby Lake-X" quad-core processor to 7.50 GHz. Only 2 out of its 4 cores were enabled for the feat. A Gigabyte X299 SOC Champion was used for this feat, and liquid helium was used to keep the CPU cool. The overclockers dialed kept the base-clock constant at 100 MHz, while dialing up its multiplier to 75.0x, yielding 7.50 GHz. Its core-voltage was kept at 1.096V.

Noctua A-Series Fans and Accessories

It isn’t very often that Noctua brings out new products. They tend to spend a long time developing everything and they won’t bring things out until they are basically perfect. Hell, it’s hard to believe that their IndustrialPPC and Redux fans came out 3 years ago. So the new introductions were focused on expanding their A-series of fans with 200mm, 120mm, and 40mm models. Along with those they also introduced a few new accessories including a small fan controller. With the fans, you may notice that this is actually their first 200mm fans and the 120 and 40mm models expand on both of those already existing areas in their product lineup with new thin 120mm fans and higher pressure 40mm fans. I was sold just with the introduction of the new 120mm 15mm thick slim fans, but I reached out to check out the whole range. So today I’m going to check out the new fans to see what Noctua has going on.

Razer Death Adder Elite Gaming Mouse Review

Way back in 2006, they released the first DeathAdder gaming mouse and it was such a hit it's endured while going through a few iterations in the past 12 years the last being the DeathAdder Chroma which we reviewed in 2014. The latest incarnation is the DeathAdder Elite, the successor to the aforementioned Chroma, and looks very much the same on the outside but brings a number of tweaks and improvements to freshen things up.
