20 of the Worst PC Setups – November 2018

I’m sure at some point you’ve had a bad PC setup. Maybe moving into a new place, waiting for a new desk to arrive or you just ran out of room. I can remember my horrible PC setups from when I was living at the dorms in college. If you have ever ventured over to the Shitty Battlestations sub-reddit you will find a lot of horrible PC setups. We will are going to pick 20 each month and feature them as 20 of the Worst PC setups for that month. Here are some of the bad ones from November.

ADATA SX8200 Pro 1 TB Review

The ADATA SX8200 Pro comes with a faster controller, which improves the performance of TLC significantly. Especially heavy writes see big improvements, with results that almost make this drive look like MLC. Pricing is extremely reasonable, too: only 21 cents per GB. The SX8200 Pro is both faster and cheaper than the Samsung 970 EVO.

Seagate BarraCuda (500GB) SSD Review

Seagate has been one of the top names in the storage industry for decades, but its almost exclusively for their hard drives. The company has been largely absent from the consumer SSD market, and their enterprise SSDs have never particularly stood out above the competition. By comparison, rival Western Digital managed to acquire SanDisk and with it a 50% stake in one of the largest NAND flash manufacturers. Seagates acquisitions have been less fruitful: they bought controller designer SandForce right around when SandForce drives disappeared from the market for good. Since then, Seagate has had to buy controllers and NAND on the open market and provide product differentiation through firmware or by integrating their drives into storage appliances.

But, after over five years since we last reviewed a Seagate consumer SSD, Seagate is bacl. Earlier this year the company re-entered the consumer SSD market with their BarraCuda SATA SSD, and today were taking a look at it. Seagates new drive adopts Toshibas 3D TLC NAND, but is held back by the outdated Phison S10 controller.

XPG SX8200 Pro Review

What's new with the SX8200 Pro? Firstly, we get increased speeds, bumping up to 3500MB/s and 3000MB/s, read and write, respectively. The SX8200 was limited to 3200MB/s and 1700MB/s. IOPS are also vastly improved, with 390,000 and 380,000 read and write, representing around a 30% increase on the previous. Speed isn't the only improvement, capacity also gets a little bump, with each tier being stepped up slightly, with the 480GB model now arriving with 512GB, for example.
