14 design monitors review: a beauty contest for screens

Computer equipment in the living room can be a source of many household discussions. This is the field where design monitors shine. It is a completely different market than what we usually dwell in, but there are plenty of options to choose from if the eye wants candy. We are testing 14 beautiful screens.

While most of the PC purchases these days are laptops, it does not mean that an external monitor is an excess. Sitting and looking at a small laptop screen can both cause eye and the back stain. Also, the picture quality is usually not all that great. Even if you have one with amazing picture, which is an exception rather than a rule, the struggle for working space and pixels that are too don’t make things any better.

In our opinion, an external monitor is an essential peripheral for anyone who does more on the computer than simply browsing while lounging on a sofa. Whether you are managing your administration or organising your holiday photos, it will go smoother with a larger external screen. There are plenty of options in this field and many comparison tests have been done before as well. In our tests, we generally first look at the technology and the purpose which means that the technical aspects are then decisive in the composition of a test field. This time we do things a bit differently.

2017 Year-End DDR4 Memory Roundup Performance Roundup

As we wrap up 2017 and kick off 2018, we have a look at three new kits of memory from Crucial, Mushkin and Patriot. We are going to quickly dive in and compare this kits to the current kit powering our Core i7-5820K Quad-Channel system. It's a pretty robust system, but it's not the latest generation of CPU. Please keep that in mind as well as the fact that our reference memory is Crucial Ballistix Elite at 2666MHz in a quad-channel kit. Unfortunately, the Patriot Viper kit is the only dual-channel kit we've got on our bench and this skews the results in favor of the quad-channel kits for several tests. Please keep that in mind and there are a couple of tests that don't factor in number of memory channels and you'll see the Patriot Kit shine in these tests.

Without a bunch of pre-amble, we'll drop the specs of the kits below and then jump right into testing and let the results speak for themselves.

Be Quiet Silent Loop 360 AIO CPU Cooler Review

At Computex 2017, Be Quiet introduced to the press an upcoming addition to their Silent Loop AIO series, the 360 model, featuring as you could have guessed a massive 360 radiator. The new flagship should top the cooling performance of the 240 and even the 280 model. Be Quiet has received many awards over the last decade and has established itself as one of the market leaders in quiet, yet powerful power supplies and processor cooling gear. Especially their Silent Wings fan series are loved by watercooling purists as these fans feature an excellent combination between airflow/pressure and silent operation. Time to open the box Be Quiet send to the MadShrimps lab. We were keen to test the new 360 Silent Loop version.

Silicon Power Diamond D30S 2TB USB 3.1 HDD Review

Instead of going with a Toshiba or Seagate branded HDD as we have seen with the previous models, this time Silicon Power has included a Western Digital WDC WD20NPVZ-00WFZT0 (WD Blue Mobile) drive, which features an 8MB cache and a 5400 rotational speed. This particular model does feature NoTouch Ramp Load Technology, so the recording head never touches the disk media, ensuring less wear to the recording head but also better protection during transit. Additionally, Silicon Power has included a slim and elegant chassis with it that is IPX4 waterproof and scratch resistant thanks to the rhombus surface pattern on the top cover; on the top we do also have a LED included which signals the transfer mode along with the power status.
