6-core/12-thread Core i7 for $200, i7-5820K Revisited

Released in August 2014 for a reasonable $390 -- the most affordable Haswell-E processor available at the time -- Intel's hexa-core Core i7-5820K has proven popular among enthusiast builders over the years and it's about time we see how it compares against more modern CPUs.

Today, the chip can be purchased for nearly half the price it originally fetched and we managed to find one online for around $200, which seems to be about the going price.

By default, the 5820K works at a base frequency of 3.3GHz but depending on the workload it can boost up to 3.6GHz (a mild increase, admittedly) and it also packs 15MB of L3 cache alongside 1.5MB of L2 cache, which was a significant increase over the mainstream Core i7 range back in 2014.

A very interesting one from Cooler Master, the MasterLiquid Maker and the one that we are reviewing today, a standard/classic layout, the Asetek 545LC.

Well, why do we need such a small AIO? Well, scroll down to find out.

Das Keyboard Prime 13 Review

We review the Das Keyboard Prime 13. Das Keyboard is one of the more mainstream names in the mechanical keyboard space that isn't primarily making "gaming" boards. The flagship Das Keyboard lineup has gone through several revisions over the years (currently the Das Keyboard 4) but has always stuck to a minimalist feature set with optional blank keycaps—they don't even have LEDs, let alone RGB LEDs. The Das Keyboard Prime 13 is an attractive alternative that includes LED backlighting at a lower price than the Das Keyboard 4.

MSI X370 Gaming M7 ACK AMD Ryzen Motherboard Review

MSI is one of the largest and most influential motherboard manufacturers in the world. MSI recognized the fact that desktop computers in a traditional sense are obsolete and even unnecessary. Many, if not most of the traditional desktop PC’s are primarily gaming and high-end workstation builds. It’s for this reason that MSI has gone all in on PC gaming and rebranded nearly everything in its product portfolio as "Gaming" products. MSI also took the red and black color scheme started and abused by other brands and made it their own. It’s been a wildly successful move for MSI and it’s moving lots of product as a result. MSI, like it’s competition, makes a wide variety of products beyond motherboards. However, MSI remains known as a motherboard manufacturer first, and everything else second.

Unless this is the first article you’ve come across that mentions socket AM4 motherboards, you probably know that the launch of these motherboards has ranged between problematic and a total disaster. There are lots of reasons for this and tons of articles and posts from people in the industry concerning what went wrong. I’m not going to delve into all that. The short explanation is that AM4 motherboards were launched with AMD’s underlying AGESA code not being up to scratch. The software, in its early state is plagued with memory compatibility and other problems. No motherboard manufacturer has been immune to these problems. ASUS, who is normally on top of things before other board makers are, released the worst AM4 motherboard we’ve seen to date. So how are things now? So many months after release, things are in a much better position. Issues with XMP still remain and memory compatibility outside the qualified vendor list or QVL is a crapshoot.

PowerColor Red Devil RX VEGA 56 8GB HBM2 Review

Along that vein, the performance can be bumped up by overclocking. In most games, the overclock I reached would deliver stock GTX 1080 FE performance. Not bad for AMD's latest architecture. When you compare the performance delivered by the Red Devil RX 580 to the FPS performance delivered by the Red Devil RX Vega 56, you see a significant lift in performance from Polaris to the lower spec Vega. When overclocking the card I was a little disappointed at the amount of headroom on the card, but that has been a trait of AMD ASICs over the past few generations. The factory overclock of 1500MHz was boosted to 1631MHz with actual running speeds in the 1611MHz range did boost performance.
