13-Way Radeon Graphics On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

To complement last week's Radeon Windows Catalyst vs. Linux Gallium3D vs. Linux Catalyst OpenGL performance comparison on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, here's benchmarks of thirteen different AMD Radeon graphics cards on the near-final state of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" in its current development form.

A budget Mac: how to install a Hackintosh

Would you like to try Mac OS but do you think an actual Mac is too expensive? With a few easy tricks you can install Apples operating system on a normal PC. In this article we will show you how to install a so-called Hackintosh.
With the introduction of Mac OS X 10.4 Apple promised support for Intel chips, and with good reason. The performance of Motorola's PowerPC CPU's couldn't keep up with the competition and Apple was forced to switch to Intel CPU's in order to offer better performance.

Amazon Fire TV: A Nice Device For Internet Video Streaming

This week Amazon unveiled the Fire TV as a small network appliance primarily for HD video streaming and complemented by some gaming and mobile app capabilities. The Fire TV is powered by Amazon's Android-based Kindle Fire OS so in this weekend review are my initial impressions of this Linux-based media system after using it the past two days.

The Amazon Fire TV is a $100 USD device currently only available in North America. The device was hard-launched by Amazon on 2 April and I've already been playing around with my Phoronix version the past two days.

Antec High Current Pro Platinum 850W Review

A viable contender for the title of best consumer PSU. Our buying advice pertaining to PSUs has fluctuated over time. In light of significant energy efficiency improvements made by manufacturers of CPUs and GPUs, where a high-end system chews through no more than 300W, we have wondered at the need for 800W-plus supplies.

Yet the nascent craze of coin mining has brought high-wattage, high-efficiency PSUs back into the spotlight. Ideally such a supply would have a long warranty, 80 PLUS Platinum efficiency and a roster of fully-modular outputs that cater for every need. Antec believes it has such a supply in the High Current Pro Platinum (HCPP) 850W.

ARCTIC Accelero Hybrid II-120 Air/Liquid Cooler Review

When AIO Liquid CPU Coolers made their debut several years ago the entire PC community welcomed them with open hands not only because of their competitive prices (always compared to custom kits) but also because of their extremely easy installation and lack of need for filling them with liquid every once in a while. Back then i too was quite excited with my first encounter with one such solution (manufactured by CoolIT if i recall correctly) but at the same time i was somewhat curious as to why manufacturers didn't choose to also implement the same hardware for use with graphics cards since all it would obviously offer much better cooling while at the same time it would reduce the weight of the card and all that just by using a different mounting system. Unfortunately however that took a long time to happen and so it wasn't until last year that ARCTIC released the Accelero Hybrid Air & Liquid Combined Cooling Solution which offered superior cooling levels and is still considered as the best AIO GPU Cooler one can find in the market. Well ARCTIC seems to think that there's always room for improvement and so a couple of weeks ago they introduced the Accelero Hybrid II-120 Air/Liquid Cooler which we have here with us today.

BitFenix Prodigy M Case Review

A few months back, I was helping my brother work on the engine of a 32 foot sailboat and one thing that always made me wonder is how they squeeze all of that equipment into such a small space. For certain jobs, you almost needed to have a child’s hands. When working in these types of environments, it is clear that the engineers who design these mechanical areas are great at cramming everything into a small space. However, they certainly are not thinking about ease of repair. It’s a bad situation when you have to disconnect the drive shaft and pull the entire engine to change a common part.

Sometimes repairing laptops, small form factor computers, or even building a small form factor system can be challenging in the same manner. There are situations where your hands are just not small enough to get into a certain location. I never enjoyed having to tear an entire machine apart just to be able to swap something out, especially because I do enjoy tinkering so much. That is not to say that there are not some engineers who try to be creative and improve on designs so that toying with your system is easy. Take, for example, the BitFenix Prodigy M small form factor chassis that uses an innovative layout to help make building a compact system easier.

Logitech G19s

With so many keyboard options on the market these days it’s really surprising that there hasn’t been very much competition with Logitech’s gaming line of keyboards with their display screens on them. This past year Logitech went through and refreshed their gaming lineup including the G19s with its full color screen. Having a screen on your keyboard can be a little gimmicky but considering how popular they have been for Logitech I was excited to see what they did with the G19s.

Thermaltake Urban T81 Extreme Full Tower Chassis Review

Thermaltake have already got some very cool and very popular enthusiast grade chassis on the market, the Level 10 GT and the Chaser A71 are both great examples of this. Their Urban series was launched last year and has gone from strength to strength as Thermaltake expand the series, and now we see the new top king of the range with the release of the Urban T81.

The Thermaltake Urban T81 is an absolutely beast, we first saw this chassis out at CES 2014 and we were blown away by what it was capable of, so I’m very happy to see it here at eTeknix HQ. It’s been packed with features that make it a formidable weapon for ultra-high end system builds, tailored to not only meet the demands of modern water cooling solutions, but also provide some industry leading air cooling options too.

As you can see from the rather extensive specifications below the chassis is capable of holding plenty of storage in both 2.5″ and 3.5″ formats. It also features a built-in fan controller and most impressively it comes with not one, not two, but three high quality 200mm fans pre-installed! As well as an extra 140mm fan in the back; as far as pre-installed fans are concerned, the T81 is way ahead of the rest of the market.
