From the beginning, motherboard support has plagued AMD's K7 series. In fact, one might go so far as to say that motherboards have done more to stop the success of the K7 than any other factor. Unfortunately, that's still happening today, as lack of viable integrated motherboards are damaging sales of AMD's Duron, and forcing OEMs to continue to turn to the Celeron.

On the other hand, AMD's performance offering, the Thunderbird Athlon, is fairly strong in the motherboard department, as there are quite a few performance-level Socket-A boards around. A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of reviewing Asus' A7V, which turned out to be an absolutely wonderful board. At that time, we concluded that the A7V was a solid board, and that it would take something very, very special to top it. We also speculated that the only board with the potential to eclipse the A7V in the near future was Abit's KT7.
