The MP3 format opened the doors to digital music for millions of consumers, many of whom now have significant collections of music in that format. In fact, Microsoft was the first company to introduce MP3 playback support at the operating system level, and is a registered licensee of the reference-standard Fraunhofer MP3 codec for playback.
