The Tech Report has put up an article "AGP performance in Windows 2000".



Not long ago, I got all riled up over problems with advanced AGP modes in Via´s KX133 chipset, especially under Windows 2000. After banging my head on some nasty AGP lock-up problems on several different motherboards with a handful of different video cards, I was convinced there was a serious problem with Via´s AGP implementation. I complained loudly, and in public. And several TR readers chimed in with suggestions for improving my system´s stability.

Eventually, I arrived at a stable combination of BIOS tweaks and software patches, which I outlined on this page of my Abit KA7 review. The long and the short of it: disable AGP 4X and AGP Fast Writes, two of the features that were supposed to make the KX133 chipset superior to its only competitor, AMD´s 750 chipset. All was stable at last, though perhaps at the expense of some performance.
