Three and a half months have passed since AMD's launch of the Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 FX, and just six days into the new year AMD is at it once again, this time announcing a new addition to the Athlon 64 family, the Athlon 64 3400+. Throughout these three and a half months we've seen the Athlon 64 family of processors quietly ease into the mainstream and high end markets, with Athlon 64 based computers becoming the top selling models of AMD's OEM partners. Unfortunately, Microsoft is still tardy releasing their 64-bit version of Windows XP, keeping the Athlon 64 a 64-bit processor in a 32-bit world. But of course all is not lost as Athlon 64 can natively handle 32-bit code, and because of its integrated memory controller and onboard 1Mb l2 cache, has no problem keeping up to par with Intel's latest processors.Read more
