AMD EPYC 7351P Review

Earlier this week we looked at the EPYC 7251 Linux performance as AMD's lowest-cost server CPU from this latest generation of Zen-based processors. Dell XPS Tower Special Edition Review: A Coffee Lake-Infused Sleeper Rig

GIGABYTE X399 Aorus Gaming 7 TR4 Motherboard Review

We review GIGABYTE's X399 Aorus Gaming 7 and see how it stacks up in the world of HEDT motherboards. This motherboard is not priced all that high considering the amount of features it touts and certainly it is not priced high for the stability we were afforded while overclocking the Threadripper to 4GHz.

GIGABYTE is one of the largest and most influential computer hardware manufacturers in the world today. The company has been around for decades and established a reputation for building innovative, stable, reliable, and high-performance motherboards. In recent years, the company has diversified its product line and now produces graphics cards, cases, laptops, and other computing oriented peripherals and devices. There was a time when GIGABYTE wasn’t my favorite brand or even a brand I liked. For a long time, GIGABYTE was another name out there in a very large market. Now, there aren’t nearly as many players on the field and GIGABYTE has not only survived a cut-throat market, but has flourished in it. GIGABYTE is not always the first to market with an idea or a product, but GIGABYTE usually hits the ground with its own take on something and is usually successful with it.

As some of you may have noticed, each of the companies producing X399 motherboards is only showing 1 or 2 models at this time. I’ve often been asked if more budget oriented offerings will hit the market anytime soon and frankly, I don’t think those will. Motherboard manufacturers have had to go through R&D of more motherboard platforms this year and in the months preceding these releases than in any other year I can recall in the last two decades. Motherboard manufacturers have had to contend with Z270, X299, X370, X399, and now Z370. That’s a monumental undertaking for all involved. Each of the companies involved have had varying degrees of success with each platform. All of these except for Z270 have had more problems than we are used to seeing. Z270 worked out well because it’s little more than an update to Z170 for a new model year and its changes aren’t anything to write home about. Plus, as I understand it, these were planned well in advance and things went smoothly, which led to a solid launch. X299, X370, and X399 have all been rushed products.

HyperX Cloud Alpha Review

The Alpha looks set to improve the original Cloud design and includes some notable changes, including fully modular cables for convenient connectivity. The more notable change would be the redesigned ear-cups that feature dual chambers to help the 50mm drivers render sound with greater accuracy and less distortion. There are various returning features, including the detachable noise cancelling microphone, the use of 'signature' HyperX memory foam for comfort, and a discrete in-line remote control for on-the-fly volume adjustment and microphone muting.

Intel Cannon Lake Could Bring AVX-512 Instruction-set to the Mainstream

Intel's next-generation "Cannon Lake" CPU micro-architecture could see the introduction of the AVX-512 instruction-set to the mainstream segments (MSDT or mainstream-desktop, and mobile). It is currently available on the company's Core X "Skylake-X" HEDT processors, and on the company's Xeon "Skylake-W," Xeon Scalable "Skylake-SP," and in a limited form on the Xeon Phi Knights Landing and Knights Mill scalar compute chips.

The upcoming "Cannon Lake" mainstream silicon will feature AVX512F, AVX512CD, AVX512DQ, AVX512BW, and AVX512VL instructions, and will support AVX512_IFMA and AVX512_VBMI commands, making it a slightly broader implementation of AVX-512 than the "Skylake-SP" silicon. The new AVX-512 will vastly improve performance of compute-intensive applications that take advantage of it. It will also be a key component of future security standards.

Reolink 5MP Security Camera Review

So, the new 5MP brings Reolink to a new level of image quality. I was quite happy with the images from my 411WS with its 4-megapixel sensor (2560 x 1440), but wow - the 5-megapixel sensor opens you up to 3072 x 1728 resolution, and that is a significant step up. Bigger is better, right? Well, yes - but the roughly 30% increase in resolution means a fair amount of additional data can be streaming through your network, and if you have an older or inadequate network, then the extra data load may slow you down a bit. Add a few 5MP cameras to your system and you may soon be in the market for a nice network upgrade.
