To start off the new year right, AMD is filling in some more of their Phenom-II lineup. Two AMD CPUs set for release in early January 2011 are the Phenom-II X4-840 and the Phenom-II X4-975BE. The Phenom-II X4-975BE HDZ975FBK4DGM will become AMDs newest flagship quad-core processor. The Thuban based 6-core processors have taken AMD's top spot away from the Phenom-II X4 Deneb based series, but the quad-cores still pack a lot of performance and come at a price that is much less expensive than the Intel alternative. The Phenom-II X4-975BE comes set for release at an MSRP of $195 and at a screaming 3.6Ghz clock speed. In this article, Benchmark Reviews is putting the Phenom-II X4-975BE through its paces. It's really going to have to perform well to compete with the new Sandy Bridge platform coming out at the same time.Read more

AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE and Phenom II X4 840 (Socket AM3) CPUs
There really is nothing "new" to talk about here. Well ok - there is the fact that both of these got a slight speed increase over what is currently available in their lines. The 975 BE gets pushed to 3.6GHz while the 840 gets a bump to 3.2. Overall, not a bad increase, but we do want to see if this is all marketing or if it really means better performance for the consumer.Read more
Overclocking the Phenom II X4 975 BE was not all that hard. We simply tweaked the multiplier and also adjusted the core frequency a little bit (along with a small voltage bump) and we were off. The problem comes from the relatively low overclocks we are still getting.

AMD Phenom II X4 840 & X4 975 Black Edition Processors Review @ Hardware Canucks
There is no denying the fact that AMD has been hell-bent on providing the CPU market with some much-needed value options as of late. While this approach hasn't led to any direct competitors against Intel's high-end products, there are several Phenom and Athlon processors that feature an excellent price / performance ratio. Today, AMD is releasing two more quad core Phenom II CPUs: the enthusiast-friendly X4 975 BE and the sub-$120 X4 840.Read more

When it came to overclocking, the X4 840 has a locked multiplier and did not offer much in the way of overclocking, with only a 400MHz burst. That being said, for the price, they are hard to beat. The X4 975, on the other hand, is an overclocking beast, making it to 4.32GHz with ease thanks to the unlocked multiplier and a bit of tweaking. At 4.3GHz and a price tag under $200, this chip is also hard to be beat - the scores were excellent and the chip never faltered.
