If AMD's HD 7970 debut Southern Islands card arrived in a fancy tux heralding a bunch of world firsts (first PCIe 3.0 card, first DirectX 11.1-compatible), this HD 7750 turns up to little fanfare in a Burton polo shirt and trainers. The new Graphics Core Next's architecture has already been shown off by the HD 7970 and those 4.3 billion transistors pack quite a punch, as it turns out, trouncing the very best of last generations' GPUs by around 20-30% at mega-high res. The HD 7970 is also excruciatingly pricey though. At £440 its staggering performance and overclocking capability are out of reach to most gamers. The HD 7750 should arrive hitting the right side of £80, making it an altogether friendlier proposal, and these new-gen AMD cards boast some excellent power efficiency by shutting off all but one core when your system enters power save mode. But what's this HD 7750 missing out on to hit that price point? Does it still make high-res screens sing?

AMD showed its hand first in this year's GPU arms race with Nvidia... by turning it into last year's arms race. While Nvidia has kept shtum about its upcoming new 'Kepler' architecture and looks to do so until Spring, AMD stole the march and released the first of its new 7-series cards, the AMD HD 7970, a few days before Christmas 2011. That sure was odd timing, but it taught us a lot about AMD's new Southern Islands architecture, specifically the 'Tahiti' chip. It's fully PCIe 3.0-supported, uses a 28nm manufacturing process to pack more transistors onto a PCB than ever before, and apart from offering very quick DX11 game frame rates, it's a highly energy efficient beast. When your system drifts off into standby, the Tahiti card switches itself all but off too, minimising power draw.The HD 7970's whopping £440 price made all those neat features all but irrelevant to the gaming masses though, so we're putting our hopes on this HD 7770 to deliver the best bits of the new AMD architecture for a more palatable price. The 'Cape Verde' chip that this HD 7770 is built around makes full use of the new Graphics Core Next architecture like its big bro, with ZeroCore power efficiency in tow and a solid 1,000 MHz core clock. If it can offer a slice of the HD 7970's performance for this price, it's on to a winner.Architecture, technology and specificationsThe Graphics Core Next architecture is a bold move from AMD in that it represents a move away from the VLIW instruction used in 6-series cards towards a GPU-processing-friendly SIMD vector processor.

AMD setzt für alle Karten ab der 7700-Reihe auf die neue GCN-Architektur, über die besonders regelmäßige Leser des Hefts, aber auch der Webseite bereits ausgezeichnet informiert sind. AMD geht damit den überfälligen Schritt in Richtung Compute, kann die zusätzlichen Transistoren, welche der neue Fertigungsprozess ermöglicht, daher aber nicht einsetzen, um ausnahmslos die Spieleleistung zu steigern. Daher fallen die Anzahl der Shadereinheiten mit 640 (HD 7770) beziehungsweise 512 (HD 7750) geringer aus als noch in den Juniper-Chips der HD-5700-Karten (800/720 Shader-Einheiten auf VLIW5-Basis). Trotz gesteigerter Taktraten und des werbewirksamen Durchbrechens der Gigahertz-Schallmauer liegt die pure Rechenleistung wie auch die Bandbreite unterhalb der Vorgänger - an die potenten Barts-Chips der HD-6800-Reihe ist ein Herankommen undenkbar.

Dezember: Ab diesem Datum durfte die Presse von der Radeon HD 7970 (ComputerBase-Test) berichten, die als erste Grafikkarte mit der neuen Graphics-Core-Next-Architektur („GCN“) an den Start gegangen war. Am 31. Januar folgte dann mit etwas Verspätung die Radeon HD 7950 (ComputerBase-Test), womit das High-End-Segment erst einmal mit den nötigen Probanden besetzt ist.

Am heutigen Tag folgen nun zwei weitere Radeon-HD-7000-Produkte, wobei es sich dabei allerdings nicht auf die mit Spannung erwartete „Radeon-HD-7800“-Serie handelt. Tom's Hardware: AMDs Radeon HD 7770 und 7750 im Test: Sehr effizienter Performance-Stillstand (German)

Seit kurzem geben wir in unserer Serie Die besten Grafikkarten fürs Geld einen Überblick, welche Karten wir in den verschiedenen Performance- und Preisklassen für besonders empfehlenswert halten. Aufgrund der Marktpreise schwanken die Empfehlungen natürlich, doch hat sich gerade in der Klasse bis 150 Euro gezeigt, dass AMD mit der Radeon HD 6870, 6850 und darunter mit der HD 6670, sowie der HD 5570 recht starke Karten im Angebot hat, was das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis anbelangt. Die Konkurrenz ist allerdings ebenso stark in diesem heiß umkämpften Segment. Verständlich, dass AMD in diesem Bereich, der aufgrund des Preises auch für viele Käufer mit etwas geringerem Gaming-Anspruch interessant ist, auch weiterhin gut aufgestellt bleiben möchte.

Nachdem man mit der kurz vor Jahresende 2011 vorgestellten Radeon HD 7970 alias Tahiti XT und der im Januar erschienenen Radeon HD 7950 (Tahiti Pro) bereits das High-End abgedeckt hat, schaltet AMD nun zwei Gänge zurück und versucht, das Portfolio im Einsteiger- und Mittelklassebereich mit neuen Karten auszubauen. Diese Familie trägt die Bezeichnung HD 7700 und wird wie die Tahiti-Chips der Flaggschiff-Karten in 28 nm gefertigt. Außerdem nutzen die Neuvorstellungen die gleiche GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next), die auf GPU-Berechnungen hin optimiert worden ist, und bringen andere Boni wie eine anständige Multi-Monitor-Unterstützung und eine dedizierte Video-Encoding-Einheit mit – zumindest auf dem Papier, doch dazu später mehr.

TweakPC: AMD Radeon HD 7770 im Test (German)

erade erst hat AMD mit der Radeon HD 7970 sein neues und teures 3D-Flagschiff und kurz danach auch die ebenso im High-End-Bereich angesiedelte Radeon HD 7950 vorgestellt, da geht es auch schon wieder weiter im für die meisten viel interessanteren und preiswerteren Mainstream-Segment.

Die Radeon HD 7770 geht an den Start und soll nun das Preisgefüge bis 200 Euro kräftig aufmischen mit neuster GCN-Architektur und natürlich all den Features, die man von den "großen" Modellen schon kennt. Natürlich mit etwas weniger Performance, dafür aber eben zu einem sehr attraktiven Preis. AMD präsentiert die Radeon HD 7700 als 1 GHz Edition, denn diese Karte ist die erste von AMD direkt für 1 GHz spezifizierte Radeon Karte. Natürlich gab es auch zuvor schon Karten mit 1 GHz, dabei handelte es sich aber um Karten, die von den AMD Partnern übertaktet wurden.

Vorgänger der Radeon HD 7770 sind die Radeon HD 5770 und 6770, die technisch weitgehend identisch waren laut AMD und Steam-Statistik zu den erfolgreichsten und meist genutzten Karten ihrer Klasse gehören. Radeon HD 5770/6770 boten Bereits eine ausgewogene Performance zu einem recht guten Preis und die HD 7770 soll es nun noch einmal deutlich besser machen.
