What's really cool is that today we're not just looking at a reference designed card from one of the AMD partners, instead we're looking at a card that not only carries an out of the box overclock, but also carries with it a new cooling solution.Read more
The Black Edition naming in the new XFX HD 7970 Black Edition Double Dissipation isn't anything new to us, the new Double Dissipation tag is, though, and that refers to the cooling solution they're using today.
PC Perspective: XFX Radeon HD 7970 3GB Black Edition and CrossFire Results
Reference clock speeds on the HD 7970 were set at 925 MHz on the GPU and 1375 MHz on the memory. For comparison, the XFX Black Edition ramps that up to 1000 MHz on the GPU and 1425 MHz on the GDDR5 memory. While these aren't out of this world results that we might have been hoping for, the 8% boost or so in clock rate will surely be seen.Read more

Benchmark Reviews: XFX R7970 Black Edition Double Dissipation
AMD might have trouble keeping up with the competition in the CPU arena, but their acquisition of ATI allowed them to become a major player in the graphics world. AMD and NVIDIA regularly trade places in the "fastest video card" rankings, and while NVIDIA's been good holding down the title with its current high-end, the Fermi-based GTX 580, it looks as if AMD's new Tahiti-based Radeon HD 7970 will snatch the crown away...especially if it's a hot-rod, factory-overclocked video card like today's test subject: the XFX R7970 Black Edition Double Dissipation.Read more

While we don't have an official statement from AMD on 7970 availability, historically the first run of every next-generation GPU has sold out and we don't expect the 7970 to be any different. (Ed: One sold out while we were writing this post).
