AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Review

Today we take a look at the flagship 'Summit Ridge' CPU, the Ryzen 7 1800X. It features 4.8Billion transistors based on the 14nm fabrication using Fin-Fet '3D' Transistor technology. There are 8 'real' cores (as opposed to modules) that features SMT (simultaneous Multi-Threading) similar to Intel's HTT, providing a total of 16 threads of computing power. AMD claimed to have aimed to improve IPC (instructions per clock) by 40% over their previous CPUs, and latest news and press releases revealed that they have smashed that target. Now, we get to find out.

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, 1700X and 1700 Processor Review

Today marks AMD’s grand re-entry to the high-end processor market after abandoning it years ago when they found that they were no longer competitive in that market. AMD exiting the high performance desktop computing market was a shock to many and it left Intel Corporation with no competition. With Intel left all alone in the desktop processor market it has allowed them to dominate the ever growing PC market. While the PC industry in general has been slowing down year after year, the PC gaming industry is booming and topped $30 billion in 2016. Desktop computers are mainly used for gaming and content creation these days and by not offering a high-end processor it let Intel rule the roost for over half a decade. Without competition the prices on Intel’s flagship processors have gone up and generational IPC gains are usually no more than 10% annually. Gamers have been dreaming about the day that AMD would return the market as they hoped it would lower prices and rejuvenate the chip designers and maybe force them to do better than the 5-10% IPC improvements that we’ve all become so accustomed to.

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, 1700X, and 1700 Processor Review

When it comes to performance, the R7 1800X, R7 1700X, and R7 1700 all deliver exceptional performance. Not only when you compare against AMD's own FX previous generation CPU's, but against Intel's new Kaby Lake Core i7 7700K and Haswell-E 8C/16T Core i7 5960X. In heavy multi-threaded workloads, the Ryzen processors provide comparable or better performance across the board. In single threaded applications, the boost clock speeds drive performance to comparable levels when the core clock speeds are not too far apart. The Core i7 7700K at 4.9GHz is still going to outperform the R7 1800X at 4GHz single threaded. Where Summit Ridge shines is in that multi-threaded workload environment. Single threaded performance is not bad to say the least, especially when you compare to the FX line up. It's safe to say AMD hit its performance targets.

AMD Ryzen 7 CPUs

So by now even most of the gamers and geeks that I know that don’t even follow hardware launches have been talking about AMDs RYZEN launch. It’s an almost unprecedented launch and there are a few reasons for it. While Intel has been chugging away with their yearly CPU launches on their mainstream chips, the every two year release of new CPU sockets. AMD has been running on various revisions of their Bulldozer microarchitecture and the AM3+ platform for the past 6 years. For a lot of the younger enthusiasts, this actually goes back to before they could afford to build a custom PC. Add to all of that the recent dominance by Intel in the higher end market and you have a lot of people foaming at the mouth to pick up something from AMD that can compete. Well after months of hype, today is the day that we can finally sit down and check out the new CPUs and the new AM4 platform. AMD sent over all three of the newly launched CPUs, the flagship 1800X, the 1700X, and the 1700. Before you run out and pick one up, check out how it performed for us and make a point to check out a few other independent sources as well so make sure it is what you were hoping.

Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro M RGB Review

Cooler Master describes the MasterKeys Pro M as a ‘hybrid TKL (ten-keyless)’ board because it combines the numpad and the arrows keys to save space. This is certainly an interesting idea, and with per-key RGB backlighting as well as Cherry MX switches, it certainly appeals on paper. Does it do enough to justify the £139.99 MSRP?

Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3

Part of the excitement about the Ryzen launch is the possibility of getting high performance at a much lower price than the premium that Intel has had on it recently. With the new CPUs, some of the new X370 boards have pushed their pricing up with all of the added features. Well, this is where the B350 chipset comes in. AMD dropped the number of USB and SAT ports on the B350 and you can’t get SLI on a B350 board but they still allow overclocking and the prices for B350 boards are a lot cheaper. This will come into play more with the mid range Ryzen CPUs, but even paired with the Ryzen 7 1700, a B350 board can be a good value. So today I’m going to check out the AB350 Gaming 3 from Gigabyte as it seems to fit the bill perfectly with a good feature list at a good price.

Samsung CF791 34-Inch Curved Widescreen Monitor Review

When it comes to building a PC one thing that we overlook most of the time is our display, I've even done this in the past.  If you think about it your display is something you look at daily for hours on end so it is probably a good idea to pick out a monitor that suits your needs and you are going to like.  I have been using two 24-inch 1080p displays for a couple of years now and honestly I did not have much of an issue with them at all.  I had been looking into ultra-wide displays for a while and talking with Samsung they said they had just the display for me to check out, it was their CF791 34-Inch Curved Widescreen unit.  It represents the perfect balance between a display made for productivity and one made for gaming.  On the productivity side you have a 34-inch WQHD (3440x1440) display that makes use of Samsung's Quantum Dot technology and has a 3000:1 contrast ratio.  On the gaming side of things you have a 100 Hz refresh rate, 1500R curve, 4ms response time, and AMD Freesync.  Can this monitor make me ditch my dual-monitor setup? Read on as we find out!
