Tweakers Australia has posted a short article on the latest ATI Reference driver for the Radeon series, v7.68.
As a lot of you would already know, a driver is basically a very small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with the specified hardware. Graphic cards are notorious for frequent driver updates, which is really a good thing when you consider the added benefit of using the updated version. ATI has been criticized in the past for shabby driver support for it's range of Built by ATI cards, as well as their Powered by ATI cards manufactured by companies other that ATI. These other manufacturers, sometimes referred to as Original Design Manufacturers (ODM's) or Add-in Board (AIB) manufacturers, buy ATI graphics chips and design their own board product around it. A revised driver can dramatically increase the overall Direct3D and OpenGL performance, as each driver version is tweaked more and more to squeeze out every last frame. NVIDIA has had a huge success with its frequent driver updates, and this trend is quickly being adopted by ATI.
