Best CPUs: Q3 2016

In our series of Buyer Guides, here’s the latest update to our recommended CPUs list. All numbers in the text are updated to reflect pricing as of (9/13). Numbers in graphs reflect MSRP.

When building a custom PC, especially on the consumer side, the processor is typically second or third down the list of priorities, behind graphics (for gamers), storage or specific motherboard features. A lot of choosing a processor comes down to budget, whether there is a preference for one brand or the other, or if the performance is similar enough that the money saved on a cheaper model can be spent elsewhere. By contrast, when it comes to workstations or enterprise situations, it helps to have an accurate profile of the intended workflow in order to choose which platform is needed, how much memory or how many expansion cards will be used, and if the software can prioritize cores over frequency or vice versa.

Fractal Design Define Nano S Review

Fractal Design has been one of our favorite case manufactures since they jumped on the scene. Their cases have always been very high-quality, easy to build in, and offer a sleek design. Their Define Series really set the bar for a silent case that was functional. Most of the cases in the Define Series were made for ATX builds, but they recently released the Define Nano S, which is made for ITX builds. If you were to look at Samsung's laptops even a year ago, you'd see gorgeous devices crafted with premium materials on the outside and a steep price tag to match – with components that, well, often didn't.Since then, for reasons that should be obvious, Samsung's vision for its laptops has shifted slowly to focus more on value than an ultra-luxury experience. (Specifically, crafting a luxury experience at a value price.) The Samsung Notebook 9 is a fine example of this.However, we're not talking about Ultrabooks here, but the often nebulous realm of mid-range multimedia laptops. Meet the 15.6-inch Samsung Notebook 7 Spin, a laptop like the Notebook 9 in its goal to bring a primo-feeling experience and more power to an approachable price point.Starting at just $899 (about £681, AU$1,206), the Notebook 7 Spin comes packing one of the best and latest Intel processors, gobs of memory and storage, and dedicated Nvidia graphics behind a crisp, 1080p HDR (!!!) screen. Oh, and it's a convertible hybrid – just in case you like those, too. Yeah, we'd say Samsung accomplished its mission.DesignThat's in no small part thanks to how Samsung employed a serious design sense in molding the Notebook 7 Spin shell while making use of less-than-high-end materials. Not much has changed about this iteration from the previous in terms of design ID, though.

Seagate 8TB Backup Plus Hub

The 8TB Backup Plus Hub is shown in the promotional image above, and is the external drive we will be checking out in this review. It is a USB 3.0 connected drive that measures roughly eight inches deep by five inches tall and just under two inches thick. While you could pack it up for portable use, given its size and its need for an external power adapter, it is much better suited to sitting on your desk in order to provide you with ample space to archive not only your computer's files, but also files from your mobile devices and social media accounts.
