CES Day 2 Round Up

The big announcements of CES 2015 are out of the way, and that means it's time for the real surprises. If we're honest, most of the announcements this year were relatively tame — iterations on what's come before. But it's everything else that's had the potential to surprise, and surprise us it has.

Cherry Announces Ground Breaking Mechanical Keyboard

Building on the success of their wildly popular MX switches, Cherry has developed their own house branded MX red switch equipped board, the MX Board 6.0. Using proprietary tech they have increased the response time of the keyboard to 1 ms. This speed actually hits the full limit of USB 3.0 giving you the fastest possible key response. In addition, they have switched to an analog system eliminating key ghosting, and 100% N key roll over. These features are part of what Cherry is calling RealKey Technology. The board itself is aimed at professional typists, programmers, and those with extreme performance needs.

Cooler Master Silencio 652S Case Review

The Silencio series cases from Cooler Master are built for silent operation with sound dampening materials to help eliminate noise while maintaining excellent cooling performance with quiet fans. These cases feature elegant looks along with minimalist aesthetics to complement the silent design. Since the release of the Silencio 652, users wanted something quieter while keeping the same body design. Now, Cooler Master has released the Silencio 652S. Instead of a single 180mm front intake fan, they replaced it with three of their new Silencio FP-120mm fans that run at 1200+200RPM at just 11db; two of which are at the front and one at the rear. Everything else stayed the same, such as the front and top I/O ports, the removable cover for the side vent, and the overall body itself. Let’s jump into the features and specifications of the Cooler Master Silencio 652S.

Hands-on review: CES 2015: Razer OSVR Hacker Dev Kit

Virtual reality has existed in various states over the years but with its recent comeback in the form of Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, more companies are joining up with the hope of bringing VR into the living room.OSVR (Open Source Virtual Reality) coupled with the $199 (about £130,AU$246) OSVR Hacker Dev Kit - the head mounted display created in-house - is Razer attempting to standardize the Wild West of VR. Announced during CES 2015, the open platform will allow third parties to design and build their own apps and hardware across any operating systems, including Windows, Android and Linux. HP Envy x2 Detachable PC 13 First Impressions

A better, less expensive alternative to Surface Pro 3

InWin D-Frame Mini mITX Case Review

If money is no object and you want opulence in the most functional way possible, InWin may have something that's right up your alley. As of late they are most well known for their artful use of aluminum and tempered glass in cases like the S-Frame, the 901/904, and the D-Frame, and today we're take a look at the D-Frame's little brother, the D-Frame Mini. Equipped with the same tubular aluminum and open-air design as its larger sibling, I'm going to see if this form factor does an mITX system any justice, and decide if the 300 dollar price tag is really worth it in the end.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970/980: Windows vs. Ubuntu Linux Performance

Earlier this week I posted some benchmarks showing NVIDIA's Linux Driver Continues Running Strong Against The Windows Driver that also included the open-source Nouveau driver results in the mix too. However, due to using the Nouveau driver, the newest GeForce GTX 970/980 graphics cards were left out of testing as the open-source driver doesn't yet fully support these newer Maxwell GPUs. In this article though we're going back to compare the Windows vs. Linux performance of these two high-end NVIDIA GPUs at a UHD 4K resolution too.

This comparison is similar to the three-way NVIDIA GeForce graphics card comparison from Monday but just testing the Maxwell-based GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980 graphics cards while running the latest binary drivers on Windows and Linux. As with the other end-of-2014 Windows vs. Linux benchmarks, Windows 7 Pro x64 with all available system updates was used and on the Linux side was Ubuntu 14.10. The latest NVIDIA Linux driver is the 346.22 driver version while the latest Windows version at the time of testing was the 347.09 driver release.

Raijintek Tisis Dual-Tower Heatsink Review

The Raijintek Tisis is a massive dual tower CPU cooler with twin fans, five big heatpipes and a kick-ass-and-take-names kind of look about it. It also has a pretty major design flaw which we'll get to in a moment. The Tisis stands upwards of 168mm tall, weighs 1050grams and ships with a pair of 140x150mm PWM fans that spin at 1000-600RPM to drive up to 70CFM air through the unit. The heatsink itself is constructed around five 8mm diameter copper heatpipes which are equidistantly spaced through two separate, 110mm tall aluminum fin stacks of differing thicknesses.
