One of the key issues with small form factor (SFF) computers and laptops is their lack of internal upgrade options. We have thus taken a keen interest in recent months in the use of USB-based sound solutions for upgrading the audio on your computer. Back in December 2003 we reviewed M-Audio's Sonica Theatre card - the first external solution to bring USB-based 7.1 surround sound - and in September 2003 we looked at perhaps the very first USB sound solution on the market - Creative Lab's Extigy. Since the release of both these solutions, however, Creative Labs has launched a new USB solution - the Audigy:tm: 2 NX - which promises to surpass both of these products. And, unlike all previous cards, the Audigy:tm: 2 NX uses the newer USB 2.0 standard and so frees itself from the bandwidth constraints suffered by those earlier solutions. For the first time we have an external soundcard that promises all the features of its internal cousins - but in a case the size of a Sony Walkman.
