Hardware Secrets takes a look at the Crossfire Technology from ATI
ATI released today its new technology that allows two video cards to be connected together in parallel in order to increase the system gaming performance – theoretically this technology can double it. Called Crossfire, this technology competes directly with SLI (Scalable Link Interface) technology from nVidia. ATI approach, however, is quite different from nVidia’s.Crossfire Technology from ATI
Both technologies work by having a chipset that provides two 16x PCI Express slots on the motherboard, allowing you to connect two hi-end video cards together. The video cards must be hooked together using an external bridge, making it possible to the video cards to join their processing power. In the case of nVidia approach, the motherboard must use the nForce 4 SLI chipset, available for both AMD and Intel platforms, while on ATI ground the motherboard must use the new Radeon Xpress 200 “Crossfire Edition”, also available for both AMD and Intel platforms.
