One of the least thought about components, but most important, when building a computer system is the power supply. A quality power supply can make all the difference between a nice stable system and one that is constantly giving you random errors that are next to impossible to track down. In a worst case situation, a low quality power supply can actually damage your components or completely kill your entire dream system.

Today we are going to be looking at one of SilverStones power supplies, the SST-ST70F from their Strider series, to see if it fits your needs for your new build or as a replacement PSU for your system that’s in need of a replacement power supply.

As with all of SilverStone’s PSU’s, the 700W ST70F is designed and engineered by SilverStone and then outsourced to be manufactured. By checking the UL listing number on the side of the PSU I found that this model is produced by a Taiwan based company called Enhance Electronics that has been in the business of making power supplies since 1986.

At 120 the Sniper is competing with a big portion of the enthusiast case market, not to mention other Cooler Master products in the form of the HAF 932, that is now outstanding value at just ?92. The RC-1000 version of the Cosmos, is also now available for just over 130, essentially making Cooler Master compete with itself!

At this price there¡¯s also competition from Akasa in the form of its Omega, although like the Sniper you¡¯ll need to add a pair of your own 120mm cooling fans to get the best out of it and there¡¯s also the ever present competition of the Antec P182.

It¡¯s a shame really as while the Sniper is clearly very well put together, well thought out and packs some exclusive and very attractive features, it¡¯s been slightly let down by some obvious cost cutting attempts and a price tag that¡¯s ?20 too high (we realise the oxymoron). That 240mm side panel fan alone would have gone a long way to improve thermal performance and would have helped to justify the price tag.

For the most part Cooler Master has another great case to add to its ever increasing big brand line-up, but while it¡¯s exhibited a great deal of good ideas and a lot of potential, we can¡¯t help but wonder how much better the Sniper could have been if the designers hadn¡¯t been held back quite so much.

The final stumbling block for the Revolution 700 is its price. Despite offering little in game performance advantage over a stock 4870 X2, which can be picked up for around £340 following aggressive price cuts in anticipation of the launch of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 295, the Revolution 700 retails for in excess of £30 more.

While the improved cooling does go some way to justify this, the 4870 X2's stock cooler is nowhere near as insufficient as the Radeon HD 4850's. There is some nice overclocking headroom unlocked by the triple slot monster, but we have to question how much extra performance you really need when you're dealing with twin RV770 GPUs in the first place. With a budget card the performance gained from a factory overclock is often very much worth the extra investment, but here it just seems almost pointless, especially with the sacrifice of the third slot.

All in all, the Palit Revolution 700 is a real let down. It's barely faster than a stock Radeon HD 4870 X2, consumes a great deal more power at idle, and really isn't worth the price premium, despite the improved cooling and quieter running. To be brutally honest, it's a poor attempt at a factory overclocked custom cooled card, and given the choice, we'd rather use a stock HD 4870 X2, if only for the sake of our electricity bill and a couple of DVI ports.

But for music fans not wanting to compromise on imaging and video, Sony Ericsson's W902 is a very impressive piece of kit.

And while Nvidia may not make the best chipset on earth, they make one of the cheapest when you are on a budget. And since it supports my Athlon 64 X2, along with 16GB of DDR2 RAM, I am more than happy to give it a shot

In our mass produced, stamped steel world, many go to extremes to show their individualism with custom cars, boats, bikes and I am pretty sure that on more than one occasion a few unique mods have made their way to the TweakTown News section as well. There is a fine line between truly unique and unique to you. Not to belittle those that put their blood, sweat and tears into modding mass produced products, but owning a true limited edition from the factory can have a huge impact on the ego.

The Cooler Master Black Label is not the company’s first product or group of products to come in limited numbers. Many of the CSX cases were produced in batches as small as 25 units and each was labeled with an identification number such as Number 15 of 25. The Cooler Master Medusa that currently houses my personal gaming system is 1 of 300. Still, the Medusa is just one of many from the CSX line, so the feeling of having a real limited product is somewhat diluted. The Black Label, at least for now does not share this stigma and currently there is only one product in what may become a Black Label product line. But for now at least, the feeling of owning one puts me on top of the world.
