Despite packing performance that's a good few frames per second faster than a stock 9800 GT (or the identical 8800 GT for that matter), and overclocking like an absolute BEAST, the XFX GeForce 9800 GT 512MB XXX Editon isn't perfect. At load, its noisy little cooling fan spins up much too early, and will start to annoy after a while, especially as it doesn't really seem to take a whole lot of graphics crunching to get it going.

It's competition that's the biggest downfall for this card though. Despite boxing for position with the ATI Radeon HD 4830 512MB throughout our benchmark suite, the XFX GeForce 9800 GT is a good £20 more expensive now that 4830s can be picked up for a teeny bit more than £90. At that price it's hard to look beyond ATI's little bang for buck wonder and if you're really set on spending close to £120 on a graphics card then a stock Radeon HD 4850 for £119.95 offers more go than the 9800 GT in the majority of tests - just be sure to bring some oven mitts as that stock cooler gets ludicrously hot even when idle.

Even competition from other Nvidia board partners is tough, with a stock 9800 GT from Zotac coming in at just £90 -- a tidy saving of over £25 for only a little less performance and you'll still get the Nvidia exclusive features like PhysX and CUDA that an ATI card will lack.

The volume of confidential data on our computers grows so quickly, so the demand for secure storage like LaCie's d2 SAFE is inevitable. The d2 SAFE is ideal for guarding top secret files or intellectual property, and is particularly useful for small teams working on confidential projects. Not only is the d2 SAFE extremely well designed and manufactured, but it's relatively inexpensive and is one of the few encrypted hard drives suitable for both Macs and PCs. It also performs well against other encrypted portable hard drives. The d2 SAFE's one downside is that it doesn't automatically de-authenticate the drive after a period of time - such as when a user has gone home for the day but failed to lock the drive. We'd like to see some sort of timeout option added here. Otherwise, the drive is sound for home or small-business use.

Colour gamut is the ColorEdge CG222W's big selling point, and it almost covers all of AdobeRGB. Visually this display looks uniform, and there were no problems in out tests with viewing angles. Colours and density seemed to stay the same within a reasonable angle of view compared to most other LCDs. We also encountered no problems with shadow detail or banding, and the uniformity of colour and density across the screen was among the best we've ever seen. Beside the offensive asking price and lack of HDMI input, it's hard to find anything to fault the ColorEdge CG222W. Being fastidious, brightness is a bit low compared to other models, it has no speakers, no USB ports on the side of the bezel, and no auto-rotate of the images in the software. There are much more affordable displays that are better at handling your entertainment, gaming and general business needs, but if graphics are your business, the ColorEdge CG222W should be on your shortlist.

Those who have been following the triple release of betas since last year won't see more than a few changes, but the free desktop VoIP communicator is a worthy final version that brings some key enhancements with video and audio bandwidth. In our tests audio quality and video streaming were excellent, although you should remember that quality depends on your Internet connection and hardware configuration. Using headphones that support ultra-wideband audio will also help. You'll never get the quality of TV, but there were certainly fewer jumps and sound syncing problems compared to previous versions of the software - that's thanks to the new bandwidth manager that salvages audio first as available bandwidth drops, followed by lowering the rate of frames per second and by compressing images more heavily. Skype 4.0 is a great product that makes VoIP easy.

At 100% load, the PSU produces power rails just above spec which earns it a spot on my Extreme Gamer Approved list. However, I did manage to find an extra 35 Watts under that militant exterior which was still supported by at least 11.97 Volts.

It provides great cooling with the help of the three copper heatpipes, that come into direct contact with the processor, proving to be a very efficient design. The Adjusted Air Channel Structure design also proved to be a simple yet efficient manner of dissipating heat. The overall size of the cooler was also a plus. For the performance it offers and at this size, it's great for mainstream users, as well as entry-level users, for large and small cases alike.
