MSI, also known as Microstar International to some, has been around for a long time. In fact, they were one of the first companies to have a working Athlon motherboard back in the heady days of AMD and the Slot A CPU. These are things like OC Genie, HDD backup and XHD (Auto build RAID 0). We have had their H55 Express based motherboard, the H55M-ED55, in the lab and can tell you just how well these features work on this entry level board.

When browsing around for boards you have to give credit to Gigabyte for sticking to a uniform color scheme across all their boards. The X58A-UD7 looks quite pretty with it's baby blue and white accents and the dark heatsink snaking across the PCB. Factor in the excellent performance and the easy overclocking and the X58A-UD7 is the real deal...

It doesn't have any fancy name it's just called the Protective Laptop Bag, but it's much more than that really. It's a messenger bag yes, but it can turn into a backpack, there are straps hidden in the back that you can pull out to have yourself a backpack. This bag is very well made with padding between each of the compartments and enough pockets to carry everything you need and then some. By far the Application Profiles feature is the coolest feature in CCC 10.2. I think it will revolutionize the way drivers will be updated. If it works as well as it looks like it will, we will see performance gains much sooner for newly released game titles. Despite not having as much of a cool factor as the application profiles does, let's not forget about the ATI PowerPlay. By downloading and updating to CATALYST 10.2 video card drivers it means that consumers can save money on your electric bill, which is fantastic. Reducing your systems power draw by 7-12 Watts may not seem like a whole lot, but over time it does add up. If you are like me and leave your computer on pretty much 24/7 it will save you money in the long run. It's not every day that you get new features, improved performance and a reduction in power. This is by far one of the greatest updates in CATALYST history!

What do you think of when I mention the word 'Spartan'? Now I can't speak for the majority, but that word reminds me of the city-state of Sparta in Ancient Greece. Starting with the bad news, Catalyst 10.2 won't be bringing us user customisable application profiles to the table, despite all of the clamour for just this feature over recent years. However, the good news is that what ATI have done is to effectively split the part of their driver that deals with application profiles out into its own discrete file, meaning that updates to this profile list can be released separately by ATI for download by users at any time as required. So, rather than having to remain in line with monthly driver releases, new profiles can be released several times a day if required, to ensure that the latest games are supported properly as soon as the driver team have tested and created the required profile. These profiles won't just be limited to adding in CrossFire support either (although it will probably remain their primary purpose), as profiles can also be used to fix other compatibility issues such as the ability to force anti-aliasing in certain titles and the like, making the new system good news even for those running only a single GPU in their machine.
