When Jason at DVNation contacted me about reviewing their new Solidata RAIDPak Internal Storage Solution that houses four 2.5 inch Solidata X2 Series solid state drives, I took a brief look at the specs and asked him to ship it over. Later that evening I had a flash go through my mind, kind of like when someone mentions a name and a few hours later the face flashes across your internal screen and you blurt out, "yeah… I know that person". This wasn’t a flash of a face; it was a statement printed on DVNation’s website for the individual offering of the Solidata X2 Series; faster than the Intel X25-M MLC SSD.

The big standout on the specifications page is the massive read and write speeds. In ATTO we actually achieved a faster write speed than what Solidata claims. It is rare to see a company go conservative with their claimed performance, but we have seen write speeds of up to 212 MB/s. ATTO is a benchmark that we test with, but we rarely publish data from this test, since it often doesn’t relate to real world performance.

We take our NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 coverage further here as we round up three factory-overclocked cards and pit them against each other. As enthusiasts, we think overclocks are great, but factory provided overclocks covered under warranty are even better. Recall that the reference NVIDIA GTX 285 clocks speeds are 648 MHz for the core GPU, 1,242 MHz for the GDDR3 memory and 1,476 MHz for the shader clock. The first card in this round-up is the ASUS ENGTX285 TOP, which sports clocks of 670 MHz, 1,300 MHz and 1,550, respectively. Next up, we have the BFG Tech GeForce GTX 285 OCX, the overall fastest card of this bunch, rocking at 702 MHz, 1,332 MHz and 1,584 MHz, respectively. Finally, we have the Zotac GeForce GTX 285 AMP! Edition, which boasts clock speeds of 702 MHz, 1,296 MHz and 1,512 MHz, respectively.

As you can see, this should be an interesting battle to see unfold. We are going to put these cards through their paces in our benchmark suite, and along the way, we'll compare them to a reference GeForce GTX 285, a reference GeForce GTX 295 and a reference Radeon HD 4870 X2. To make it even more intriguing, we're throwing in GTX 285 SLI benchmarks in dual and triple configurations.

ASUS's N80Vc is a long way from being either the best desktop replacement machine or corporate road warrior - for starters, its graphics and processor chipsets are entry-level and there are few system management tools - but it is very good value if you are looking for a good all-rounder that's HD ready. It looks distinctive, is reasonably powerful, and has plenty of connectivity options. The 14.1-inch screen's resolution of 1280=D7800 pixels is usable, but it is not the brightest or sharpest I have seen. Besides the awfully bouncy keyboard and noisy mouse buttons, the machine is comfortable to work on for long periods. And considering it's almost as secure as Fort Knox, you can't really go far wrong.

Another great thing about vReveal is its ability to utilize CUDA. The processor may be considered the most important part of a computer, but a program such as vReveal will put a lot of load on your CPU, which means you won't be able to use that processing power for something else. The GPU's ability to take most of this load is a great addition to any program, and I'm glad MotionDSP used it for vReveal. On top of that, having your GPU enabled means you'll notice better quality, more FPS, and faster save times. Though if your video is only 30 seconds long, the save time will only decrease by a few seconds. If you're using longer videos you'll notice a much better improvement. If you're using ATI, or just don't have a CUDA-enabled video card, MotionDSP didn't leave you out. vReveal will work with just about any CPU, but then again if you're still using a Pentium 3 or older, editing a 10 second video might take hours.

Alright. Time for a refresh, it's almost spring, and that's the season for growing video cards. The HD 4890 is, for all intensive porpoises, a retooled HD 4870, which, in my humble opinion, is overdue. Not that the 4870 was by any means a bad card, and it certainly got its deserved amount of press, but it had its failings and, when prices were even, I'd generally recommend a GTX 260. AMD doesn't like losing on the price front, that's for damn sure. But it never hurts to have a great high-end card, either. Look, this card still isn't a match for the ridongulous GTX 285 or the limited 295, but it's an outstanding improvement over the HD 4870. Enough to upgrade?
