Using PerfectDisk is a joy and it's always great fun to see how much space you can recover from your hard drive - PerfectDisk even shows the before and after performance of the drive, the type of files moved, and how frequently modified each file normally is. The software is easy to use, and there are plenty of settings and reporting for advanced users. Besides the effectiveness of PerfectDisk, those with older (slower) machines will appreciate the software's low footprint and the way it allows you to get on with your tasks without dragging your machine to a crawl - it doesn't overload the CPU and RAM like many utility programs sometimes do. This is an obvious advantage over the typical Windows 7/Vista/XP Defrag, which typically cuts performance horribly. If you are currently using PerfectDisk 8 or 9 there might not be enough to temp you to upgrade, but if you don't have a third-party defrag program on your Windows computer, buy Raxco's PerfectDisk 10 and you won't regret it.

WS_FTP Pro is one of the most popular Windows FTP clients around. It offers standard FTP functionality with added features like 256-bit AES encryption, SSL support, mirroring capabilities, and even scripting and scheduling. The interface is in dire need of an overhaul and barely any new adequate features have been added. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a FTP client that's robust, reliable and well supported, it's a solid choice. Furthermore, the ease of use and seamless integration into the Windows environment makes WS_FTP ideal for beginners who are used to Windows but don't want to have to learn a new program interface. Having said that, newbies should check out the leaner and cheaper WS_FTP Home edition. WS_FTP Pro 12 is worth purchasing if you're a new customer with a sudden need for an FTP client, but existing users should wait for the next release (or two) if Ipswitch maintains this laxidasical approach to software updates.

Speaking of new paths, in mid-February AMD launched the new Socket AM3 platform which finally brought forth official support for DDR3 memory. Along with this new socket, AMD launched three processors in the form of the Phenom II X3 710, X3 720 Black Edition, and the X4 810, with the promise of higher-end quad-core models to come (X4 925, X4 945, X4 955). Since the Phenom II's feature an integrated memory controller, the DDR3 support was added there so the actual AMD chipset didn't need any fundamental changes.

I get quite a few coolers to test that pass over my desk. Most of these coolers follow the basic tower design and heatpipes of various quantities and diameters that remove the heat either by directly touching the IHS of the CPU, or removing it from an aluminum or copper base. What soon follows after the design is to start looking at a sufficient cooling mechanism or a high CFM fan in most instances. We should all know by now that with high CFM fans brings with them an elevated noise level as well.

Thermaltake is one of the smaller percentages of manufacturers that are taking the jump to silent computing. They have developed a line of ISGC, or Inspiration of Silent Gaming Cooling CPU coolers. Thermaltake incorporates a new fan to cool this line-up of coolers, the Pure Silence ISGC Fan 12. This fan provides a decent amount of CFM and has some technology involved to keep the noise levels down to a whisper while in use. More on these fans will be discussed later in this review.

What is a knight? Traditionally, a knight is an esteemed and entitled member of the warrior class in a society. In other words, they are the best soldiers. They've been trained to take on challenging foes and crush them to bits. ASUS's "Dark Knight" was able to put up a very strong fight in most of the benchmarks it went through. However, it was not able to outperform every card thrown at it. This, of course, is 100% understandable because the 4870 is nothing new. In fact, the EAH4870 performed extremely well for its class. In most benchmarks, it was able to compete with the GTX 260 and Sapphire's 4870, which was equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory as opposed to only 1GB. In some cases, with an overclock, the "Dark Knight was able to outperform ATI's new 4890.

A couple of weeks ago NVIDIA made some small modification to it's mid-range line-up, in specific their GeForce 9800 GTX+ product. These design changes are related to PCB board design, power efficiency and bringing the overall cost of the product down. As a result the GeForce 9800 GTX+ had what you can call an extreme makeover. Same features, same performance .. yet less power consumption and NVIDIA was able to shave off roughly 25%~35% of the sales price, bringing the GeForce 9800 GTX+ from just over 200 USD, towards sub 150 USD with 1024MB of videocard memory. All that is now labeled under the new product name, GeForce GTS 250.
