While the Mugen 2 was a bulky, rather unattractive and more industrial looking cooler, today we have a tower cooler with aluminum fins and copper heat pipes and Scythe even keeps the pre-cooler on board. But that is where the similarities end. The design, concepts and physics built into the latest sample are in a way something I have seen, such as offset fins, but this Trident Multi Layer Fin Structure is something completely new. Now, I have seen notches and cuts and curves, even closing off the sides to get better temperatures and fan air flow, but never implemented like this.

Scythe has done well with the cooler I previously tested and since it doesn’t make too good of business sense to release something worse, I am eager to see just what all this technical talk on the box is all about. Join me as I get my first look at some new designs and hopefully a cooler that can offer good numbers in our testing without breaking the bank. This new CPU cooler is called the Yasya, or it also goes by the number SCYS-1000 and from the MSRP I can say it meets one requirement. This new six-core "Thuban" codenamed die weights in with an estimated count of over 900 million transistors compared to the 758 million transistors of "Deneb", most of which is concerned with packing in those two additional CPU cores over its predecessor, which has been achieved by increasing the overall die size to 346mm² against 258mm² for earlier Phenom II parts. Despite those additional cores, Thuban still sports the same shared 6MB of level 3 cache as Phenom II X4 CPUs, although it does receive an additional 1MB of level 2 cache to give it 3MB in total (although this still totals 512KB per core). All of this is fitted into AMD's existing AM3 socket, complete with DDR2 and DDR3 memory support, and with a TDP of 125 Watts.

The only other big change for the Phenom II X6 over previous Phenom II CPUs is the introduction of AMD's answer to Intel's "Turbo Mode", known as "Turbo Core". Although its mechanics are somewhat simpler than Intel's own turbo mode, the basic concept is the same, allowing the Phenom II X6 to boost the clock speed of a core from its standard 3.2GHz to a peak of 3.6GHz while remaining within its TDP by independently increasing the clock speeds of some cores (up to three at any one time) while others are dormant and not doing any work, thus boosting performance in scenarios where not all six cores are busy.

The Hydro 50 is the result of a joint effort between Asetek and Corsair. Those who have previously experienced building custom water cooling setups will no doubt be familiar with Asetek's offering, They have also been behind more exotic products such as VapoChill in the past and as such, they have a ich heritage of delivering enthusiast level products. However, since their focus was shifted to the OEM market, their name became less well known amongst casual users. In order to leverage their expertise to the consumer market, they teamed up with Corsair who already had a very strong global channel and loyal consumer base. Some could say it was a marriage made in heaven! Combining Asetek's latest cold plate technology and radiator with Corsair's brand name, we now have the H50. Corsair's attention to detail and demand for best performance also means that further improvements were made to the cooler to exceed expectations. This is hopefully what we will see today.

This is one of the best air coolers I've had the pleasure of using. The included package, like the Noctua NH-D14 itself is large and provides you with pretty much everything you could possibly need. The SecuFirm2 mounting setup allows you to use this cooler with plenty of different socket setups, and it works really well. It's easy to install, although I did find that even with my Cosmos S, I had to install the cooler by removing the motherboard (I've cut the motherboard tray to allow for in place installation of coolers); the Noctua NH-D14 was just too large and unwieldy to install with the motherboard in the case. Certain motherboard cooling setups, like those found on some MSI boards may limit your installation options although we certainly had no problem installing the Noctua NH-D14 on the two boards we tried including an MSI board. We did however have to swap our OCZ Reaper ram with it's heat-pipe cooling setup to some smaller/shorter Patriot ram to clear the 120mm fan.

I was able to shave 24 seconds off of the Windows start up time bringing it down to under a minute. Even though this startup time isn't great... it is better than having to wait almost a minute and a half. The shut down time was also reduced to under 20 seconds. By removing unused resources and deleting junk files, the utility was able to improve the overall system performance to within reasonable times on a system that gets heavily used on a daily basis.
