On November 9th, 2006, NVIDIA launched the G80 GPU. Not only does this new GPU boast an entirely new massively-parallel unified architecture, it also marks the beginning of a new era in 3D graphics - DirectX 10.

Almost a year later, NVIDIA is finally launching a refresh of the G80 GPU - the NVIDIA G92 GPU. It is also known as the D8P, short for Desktop 8 Performance. Although the basic architecture remains unchanged from the G80, the G92 comes with some nifty improvements. This is why the G92 has 73 million more transistors than the G80 even though it actually has fewer shader processors.

Revoltec has made a simple, yet attractive case for not too much money. The Zirconium is currently sold for around 60 euro's. The front of the case is sleek and the I/O ports on top are a nice addition for easy access. The blue led's in the front lit's up nicely. Although the case is a bit cheaper, it surely doesn't have to be less good than other cases that are twice the price of the Zirconium. The Zirconium has the same internals as higher end cases and the finishing touches are just as good. No sharp edges to be found and no vibrations from hard drives either.

Here's where it gets even better: when running under a full load with 4 threads on CineBench 10 the QX9650 uses 52 fewer watts than the QX6850 based on the 65nm process technology. Only two processors, the dual-core X6800 and E6750 CPUs, run at lower wattages, but they have HALF the processing cores. When we bring in the UT3 testing, the QX9650 is again using 54 fewer watts than the quad-core QX6850 and even less than the dual-core X6800.

We think it's fair to say that Intel's Penryn architecture can be regarded as a success, as it offers some decent performance enhancements over existing processors, while using much less power in the process. Most of the success can be attributed to the "brute force" methods like the 50 percent larger cache instead of the more delicate features like SSE4, which requires specific optimisation in software to see the benefits. However the most interesting changes should be in the mobile parts which feature some great new technologies.

Specifically, the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is of course a processor that everyone would love to own, but very few will have the money or need for it. Most of us will want to wait for the mainstream dual- and quad-core 45nm CPUs to arrive, but the Extreme Edition has never been about volume. It's about a technological demonstration that creates a halo effect to help sell the more mainstream-orientated products. I guess you could think of the QX9650 as the Bugatti Veyron of the CPU world - it annihilates everything in its path.

After removing the cooler from the packaging it really looks like nothing else I have seen to cool a video card. It features four heatpipes connected to copper fins with an enclosure over the heatsink that has an alien type look. The top of the enclosure has a grill meant to symbolize the high wind movement in a Hurricane. Looking at the under side of the cooler you can see just how large it really is. The contact surface is protected from damage with a clear adhesive tape that includes a warning message to remove before installing.

On the contrary, I was very pleased with it, and compared with other options, I believe it is the best buy. The GeForce 512MB 8800 GT will fill a gap, a gap that the 320MB model has set. Yet due to it's lower pricing (199 to 259 USD) will compete directly with the 8600 GTS, which is interesting as the 8800 GT will annihilate that graphics card performance wise, let me add a little clue, these cards perform close to the 8800 GTX and are pretty darn impressive at this price level.
