This article was initially intended to continue our analysis of shader units and to show how their number affects NVIDIA G8x performance in modern games. We planned to change parameters of a G80-based graphics card to make it resemble the mid-end G84-based products. Unfortunately, our plans never got to the first base - G80's hardware performance counters didn't work with some shader units disabled. So we decided not to trash our test results and use them in a brief comparative analysis of performance and some other parameters of modern 3D games.

Hardware Secrets posted everything you need to know about Tesla, a series of “video cards” from nVidia that are used to process regular programs and not video under a concept called GPGPU.

With the processing power of GPUs (i.e. the graphics chip located on the video card) increasing everyday – to the point that they are more powerful than regular CPUs for math calculations – it's been discussed for quite some time now if GPUs couldn't be used as a CPU for processing regular programs. The idea, known as GPGPU (General-Purpose Computation on GPUs), is to throw to the GPU calculations that would otherwise be done by the CPU in order to increase performance. The problem is how to do this, as a programmer would have to know how to program to a specific GPU in order to make a program that could use the system GPU, and this program wouldn't work with a different GPU. To solve this issue nVidia launched a free C compiler to their GeForce 8800 series, called CUDA. With CUDA any programmer can easily compile their programs written in C to use the power of the system GPU to process their program. Going one step further, nVidia launched a series of "video cards" called Tesla. These "video cards" feature GeForce 8800 GPUs but they do not produce video: they are targeted to be used as CPUs, processing programs. I've reviewed many TV Wonder products and they've all been very good, but AMD's ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo PCIe x1 takes the cake! Why this TV Tuner product is exceptional has mostly to do with the 650 Pro chip. This particular product has two tuners, one tuner is responsible for receiving analog TV channels and the other receives digital and HD channels. It's also capable of receiving FM radio. Silverstone have gotten everything just about right with this chassis, and more importantly, they have gotten nothing much wrong. There is no part of the case that seems poorly designed or tossed in as an afterthought. Sure, I'd prefer a different I/O panel option on the front/top of the case, I'd love even more flexible access with the motherboard tray, and I think a couple of extra fans could be included for the price, but these are pretty niggley points that are in the end, personal preferences more than meaningful criticism. Taken as a whole, the chassis is well thought out, expertly executed, wonderfully finished, and is a pleasure to use.

Both the Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 retain their forebear's 320 Stream Processors, split into four arrays of eighty, coupled with both sixteen texturing units and ROPs. The tessellation unit also remains, as does HDMI support (with dedicated audio capabilities) as standard. However, gone is the 512-bit ring bus memory controller seen (and doubtless rarely used to its full potential) in R600, to be replaced by a narrower 256-bit ring bus controller, although this has supposedly been optimised to utilise bandwidth more efficiently.

In the same vein as NVIDIA's G92, RV670 sees an upgrade to its video processing capabilities over R600, seeing the UVD engine previously seen on ATI's mid-range and low-end offerings finally transplanted into the performance sector, and not before time. This allows for full acceleration of the entire video decoding processing when dealing with any High Definition movie format, be it H.264 or VC-1. Also as per G92, RV670 becomes the first ATI offering to support the PCI Express 2.0 standard, offering more bandwidth for anyone using a suitable PCI Express 2.0 equipped motherboard.

Today AMD finally takes the wraps of their new ATI Radeon HD 3870 and 3850 cards, based on their RV670 GPU. At 55nm and 320 Stream Processors strong, these new cards are set to do battle with the likes of a Geforce 8800 GT and GTS.

"As for the fundamental blocks inside the GPU, the RV670 doesn't differ very much from R600. The RV670 still has 320 stream processing units, 16 texture units, and 16 ROPs. The RV670 however, does away with the 1024-bit internal ring-bus memory controller in favor of a 512-bit variant. And its
memory interface has also been pared down from 512-bits to 256-bit. From high-level perspective, these changes sound-like downgrades, but other tweaks to the GPU negate a massive loss of internal and external bandwidth.

After looking over the graphs in the gaming benchmarks, it's clear to see that this card's results fluctuated quite a bit. The scores weren't too impressive in some of the games but it did great in others and definitely started redeeming itself in BioShock - which is a very recent game. It'll be interesting to see how this card performs once we start implementing new games into our benchmark lineup. There are new drivers being released on 11/15/07. I will download these drivers as soon as they are released and re-run all benchmarks and tests and see if the performance is impacted with the new drivers. If I get different results, I will update the review and the conclusion.

The card we received from PowerColor is their Xtreme edition with 512MB of GDDR3. The Xtreme edition is a factory-overclocked card, equipped with a ZEROtherm VGA Cooler to offer better cooling performance. The reference Radeon HD 3850 card has 320 stream processors; the core is clocked at 670 MHz and has 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.66 GHz. The PowerColor Radeon HD 3850 Xtreme's core is clocked at 720 MHz and has 512MB GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.8 GHz.

As we alluded to in Part 1 of this review the Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200.11 is aimed at the mainstream consumer market and the Seagate Barracuda 1TB ES.2 is designed more for enterprise networking solutions. In this part of the review we will concentrate on the Barracuda 1TB ES.2 and therefore will use a slightly different approach, one more slanted toward the audience for which this drive is intended. It should also be noted that our focus here will be primarily on testing; as many of the issues covered in Part 1 (i.e.; Perpendicular Magnetic Recording overview, and the like) are also applicable to this drive and would be redundant if repeated.

We plan to test the Barracuda 1TB ES.2 drive strictly in the 64-bit VISTA environment which is much akin to what it will face in real-world application. We have added additional tests to our regimen that are 64-bit specific that we feel will help give the potential consumer a better feeling of this drive's performance.
