The VRM and X58 chipset cooling solutions are linked together with a heatpipe; I do not consider this a very good solution because, as we already know, the X58 chipset is very hot also, like the VRM, and when we overclock the system and they will transfer the heat from one to another. I would have preferred this board to have some bigger heatsinks, with one or two heatpipes between the VRM and the X58 chipset.

Today for review I've got a pair of new fans from Noctua, they're called the NF-P14 FLX fans. They're 140mm fans making them fairly large of course, these 140mm fans are special in that they have round frames. The round frames make the fan essentially smaller, or at least the frame is smaller. The mounting holes in the frame will fit where any 120mm fan will fit, thus the end user can easily replace a 120mm fan with a 140mm fan for even more cooling ability. The Sentry 2 is NZXT's latest addition to their Sentry fan controller series. Unlike the Sentry 1, the Sentry 2 features a colourful touch screen interface in order to make the fan controlling experience much more intuitive. Furthermore, the colourful interface of the screen will certainly add a hint of modern looks to any computer system. Asides from the touch screen interface, the Sentry 2 packs many worthwhile features such as support for five case fans, five temperature diodes, automatic and manual fan control modes, and 10W per channel.

Although fan controllers with knobs make up the major part of the market, the Sentry 2's flat bezel will be very helpful for consumers that have a computer case with a front door that could potentially interfere with such knobs. Given the fact that touch screen interfaces are not broadly used amongst fan controller manufacturers, it will be most interesting to see if NZXT has hit the right notes in making the Sentry 2 a good product.

A mixed bag in the electrical performance stakes. The DC regulation is exceptional with the 12V rail only dropping 20mV when taken from 0 to over 80 amps! Efficiency and power factor levels are very good but not quite up to the claimed 80 Plus certification following the OCC testing methodology. I will mention at this stage the claimed 80 Plus and Nvidia SLI Ready certification of which I can find no evidence, at the time of writing this review, on the 80 Plus Org or Nvidia websites.

The standard for DDR3 memory is still 1.5v, but most high performance memory has voltages far above that. Many earlier high performance DDR3 modules had a Vdimm of 1.9v-2.1v. It still amazes me that the memory manufacturers were able to make DDR3 memory run at DDR3-2000 and higher at 1.65v. Although AMD has had some exciting new mid- and entry-level chips come to market in the last several months, their top of the line Phenom II series has not seen much action since the beginning of the year. But since we won't see AMD's new six-core desktop Thuban processor emerge until next year, what we have to feed off of in the meantime is a new Phenom II core revision, the C3. Beginning with the highest-clocked chip, the 965 BE, the new core will begin to filter down through the rest of the lineup through next year. Enhancements to the core are expected to lower voltage requirements and thus reduce operating temperature, which can potentially lead to better, more stable overclocks. Is it worth the upgrade expense for a current Phenom II owner to make the change to the new revision though? Join me as I aim to find out!
