Best SSDs: Q3 2019

A solid state drive is often the most important component for making a PC feel fast and responsive; any PC still using a mechanical hard drive as its primary storage is long overdue for an upgrade. The SSD market is broader than ever, with a wide range prices, performance and form factors.

In the six months since the last edition of this guide, not much has changed in the retail SSD market. The constant price drops that kept the SSD market exciting through most of 2018 are over and prices have generally stabilized. Entry-level NVMe SSDs no longer carry a premium over SATA SSDs, and for most consumers a NVMe SSD should now be the default choice over SATA. Products using 64-layer 3D TLC still outnumber newer products using 9x-layer 3D TLC, and the newer drives are for the most part more expensive without offering much tangible improvement in performance, power efficiency or reliability.

Fractal Design Vector RS Case Review

Since the introduction of their Define range of cases, Fractal Design has been regarded as a market leader in enthusiast focused ATX PC cases. The new Vector RS case takes the excellent base structure of the brilliant Define R6 chassis, now wrapped in a stylish looking exterior with a touch of RGB bling to finish it off.

If you think of the Vector RS as a turbo charged Define R6 with a body kit, you won’t be far off the mark. In 2017, my colleague Leo rated the Define R6 as the best PC case of the year, so the Vector RS has big shoes to fill.

Fractal Design Vector RS Case Review

Today we are checking out a new case from Fractal Design, which is not part of their Define or Meshify series, but rather a new series all together called “Vector”. This case keeps many of the design and quality standards that we love and know from Fractal Design, but adds a different and more modern look. The Vector RS has two tempered glass panels (side & top), room for up to eight hard drives, three included 140 mm fans and a fan hub, room inside for motherboards up to E-ATX, a modular internal design, and even a sleek ARGB strip that comes with Fractal Design’s Adjust R1 controller. Fractal Design Vector RS Review

A modern twist on the venerable Define R6. Fractal Design is introducing a new line of PC enclosures dubbed the Vector Series. Intended to offer an alternative aesthetic to the familiar Define Series, the first product in the range, Vector RS, is described by the manufacturer as a hybrid between its popular Define R6 and S2 chassis.

Good news for those who favour Fractal's generous layouts, as the Vector RS is based on the same underlying frame as its Define siblings, resulting in mid-tower dimensions of 552mm (L) x 233mm (W) x 498mm (H). We expect a capable interior, but given the £180 MSRP (£40 more than a Define R6 USB-C), what is Fractal doing to help justify the premium?

Fractal Design Vector RS Review

This round, we’re checking out the Fractal Design VECTOR RS, a mid-tower PC chassis from a new series (not Define this time). The name is different, but the principle is similar, and this chassis is trying to combine the best of both worlds (R for the more silence and air, and S for performance and a liquid-oriented approach). You can take a look at the Define S2 (and the RGB version), as well as the Define R6 for the reference. The first thing that you notice is the RGB strip along the front. What’s else is new, then?

OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Review

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is another Snapdragon 855-based phone that was released earlier in the year, and while we did a quick hands-on test of the device back in May, we never really got to fully reviewing the unit until now. Beyond putting the Reno 10x through our usual testing suite, what’s interesting is that in this time Oppo has had the opportunity to refine the software, and we’ve seen particular improvements on the side of the camera with the introduction of a new low-light photography mode.

The device has two key characteristics: A full-screen minimal bezel display which is enabled by housing the front-camera in a mechanical motorised slide-out mechanism, and a triple-camera setup amongst which we find a “periscope” zoom camera module. Both of these features separately aren’t unique to the Reno 10x, however their combination is unique to Oppo.

OPSEAT Grandmaster Gaming Chair Review

So when the opportunity came up to review OPSEATs Grandmaster Gaming Chair (Grandmaster) I quickly jumped out of my current seat for a chance to do the review. WD Black P10 Game Drive Review

The PS4 launched with a 500GB hard drive and later came out with a 1TB model. If you were really lucky maybe you have the ultra-rare 2TB 500 Million limited edition model. But for the most part you are going to be a little limited in storage capacity on the PS4. It is 6 years old now! The Xbox One isn’t much different as well. But games still continue to get larger. My wife and I picked up Red Dead Redemption 2 at launch and it took up 99 gigs and required 150GB of space to install. Talk about a quick way to take out a big chunk of your storage and frankly I don’t want to have to uninstall it and have to go through that full installation later, it takes forever. Both can get an upgraded hard drive, but if you don’t want to go through that trouble Western Digitals WD_Black gaming-focused lineup has expanded to add a few different options. Today I’m going to check the P10 Game Drive which is a USB based external hard drive designed to expand gaming storage on your PC, PS4, and Xbox. I’m going to see what the new drive has going for it and then check out its performance as well. With capacities of 2TB, 4TB, and 5TB even the smallest model isn’t going to get clogged up from a single game install.
