WANSync to Deliver Critical Inspection and Status Analysis Data from Framatome Nuclear Facilities to Multiple Host Locations across the U.S.
Burlington, MA, February 17, 2004 – XOsoft, a leading provider of business continuity and continuous backup software solutions, today announced that Framatome ANP, the world leader in the design and construction of nuclear power plants and research reactors, has successfully employed XOsoft’s state-of-the-art WANSync product for real-time analysis and data distribution. WANSync, which securely synchronizes entire critical information servers to remote replicas through continuous, real-time replication, has been deployed to synchronize live inspection and analysis data between NAS (Network Attached Storage) servers at nuclear sites and replicas at multiple host locations.
Real-time delivery of massive amounts of analysis data (reaching as many as 400 gigabytes within a four-day period) is crucial for timely identification of flaws in nuclear site steam generator tubing. Before implementing XOsoft’s WANSync business continuity solution, Framatome ANP’s Outage Services Division found it increasingly difficult to transport this data over fluctuating WAN connections between nuclear sites and central host locations.
“We were looking for a solution that would enable us to reliably and securely transport huge amounts of data between nuclear sites and our host locations over WAN connections in real time,” says Bill George, Senior Network Engineer with Framatome ANP’s Outage Services Division. “No less important was the solution’s ability to bridge the gap between Unix and Windows, to collect data from Unix workstations and allow us to analyze them in a Windows environment.”
After testing a number of solutions, none of which were up to Framatome ANP’s speed and data volume requirements, Bill came across XOsoft’s WANSync. “WANSync worked extremely well right from the start,” he says. “In a field test at one of our nuclear sites, it effortlessly replicated hundreds of megabytes to our host location over our WAN. WANSync even allowed us to reconfigure and fine-tune replication scenarios on the fly, which we found extremely appealing, as it enabled us to avoid interruptions in our operations.” He adds, “tree-topology replication also proved to be of great value, essentially enabling us to achieve load balancing, and reduce our bandwidth utilization by as much as 40 percent. WANSync provides all the speed, reliability and cost savings we require.”
“WANSync represents the most advanced WAN-based business continuity and data distribution platform on the market,” says Leonid Shtilman, Founder and CEO of XOsoft. “Framatome is an exceptional addition to a growing list of satisfied WANSync customers, who have chosen our technology to achieve even greater geographical business coverage, while minimizing costs and bandwidth requirements.”
Framatome installed WANSync on two NAS servers at a test nuclear site and on additional NAS servers at several host locations, where real-time data is required for analysis purposes. WANSync now enables data to flow smoothly and securely between both Framatome locations. WANSync is also used for load balancing, mirroring the NAS servers at the host location to servers at two additional host locations across the United States. WANSync’s tree-topology replication capability enabled all three host locations to receive real-time data, while minimizing bandwidth utilization.
The field trial conducted at Framatome’s nuclear site is the first step towards a broader WANSync deployment to be carried out at as many as 14 different nuclear sites in the near future. Framatome is currently also testing XOsoft’s Data Rewinder, which provides advanced protection against data corruptions, and allows corrupted servers to simply be “rewound” to their most recent consistent state. Once testing is completed, Data Rewinder will be deployed at numerous Intranet portals serving Framatome’s nuclear facilities across the U.S.
