These reference cards with the reference cooling were able to clock up to 952/1904MHz on the CUDA cores and 1092MHz (4368MHz effective) with not much more than a bump of the voltage and fan speeds to get there. That's a 20+% improvement folks. This offered up a significant increase in firepower and showed in the results. Add in that second card and the performance skyrockets. When two GTS 450 cards are run in an SLI configuration, the performance almost doubles in most of the games I tested. In some instances the performance literally did double from the single to a multiple card configuration.

Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 SLI and Palit GTS 450 Sonic Platinum Review

Nvidia landed an astounding blow to AMD last July pulling the GeForce GTX 460 out of nowhere and quickly taking the lead as the best mid-range graphics card on the market. It's only been a few weeks since and the 768MB version of this card can now be had for as little as $170, crushing the Radeon HD 5830, and questioning if the slightly cheaper Radeon HD 5770 is worth the money.

However there is still a huge market for sub-$200 gaming graphics cards. AMD has had a range of products in this segment for some time now, and just recently they cut prices all around likely ahead of any launch from competitor Nvidia. The Radeon HD 5770 ($140), 5750 ($120) and 5670 ($80) are all current generation GPUs, while Nvidia has had nothing new to offer in these price brackets. Until now, of course, as we check out the newly released GeForce GTS 450, code-named GF106.

Only a few years ago NVIDIA's SLI technology was a feature only the most elite gamers took advantage of, helping them to push the fastest graphics cards on the planet even faster. Often times a second GeForce video card could be combined into a SLI set and produce 33-50% more performance. Those days are gone, and Benchmark Reviews has learned that a set of GF106 GPUs can do a lot more than scale; they can multiply. Priced to launch at $129, the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 packs 192 CUDA cores into its 40nm GF106 Fermi GPU and adds 1GB of GDDR5 memory. Benchmark Reviews overclocked our GTS 450 to nearly 1GHz, and even paired them together in SLI. NVIDIA expects their new GTS 450 to compete against the Radeon HD 5730 at 1680x1050, but we learned from GTX 460 there's usually more performance reach than they suggest. NVIDIA Launches GeForce GTS 450, Affordable DX11 Graphics

As its GTS moniker denotes, NVIDIA's new GeForce GTS 450 is targeted at the mainstream market. That card's reference specifications call for a 783MHz GPU clock, with 1566MHz CUDA cores, and 902MHz GDDR5 memory (3608MHz effective data rate). With those frequencies, stock GeFore GTS 450 cards offer 57.7GB/s of memory bandwidth with a 25.1GigaTexel/s textured fillrate. As is typically the case with mainstream NVIDIA GPU's, however, board partners will be releasing cards clocked somewhat higher than the reference specifications recommend.

Along with a $129 (give or take) price tag, the GeForce GTS 450 is certainly more affordable than any other DX11-class GPU out there right now. Whether or not it's worth the asking price remains to be seen, however. So let's dig in and find out what the new GeForce GTS 450 is made of and if it deserves a place in your next system.

After the drawn out launch of GF100 and the GTX 400 series earlier this year, NVIDIA has been firing on all cylinders when it comes to the launch of the rest of the Fermi family. In July we saw the launch of the GF104 GPU and the GTX 460 it powers, providing a surprising tweak to the Fermi architecture on what should have been a simple waterfall part, and in the process trampling AMD’s Radeon HD 5830 at the $200 price point. For the first time in over a year we saw an NVIDIA product come out that was hyper-competitive on performance and pricing, the kind of competition we sorely miss.

By just using an overclocking utility like EVGA Precision we were able to bump up the clocks effortlessly.
