This time around Intel has implanted a number of new technologies into their most recent motherboard chipsets, the i915 and i925. These new technologies require an upgrade of a variety of key system components other than the motherboard itself. A totally new approach has been taken with the CPU socket for the new LGA 775 socket. Gone is the AGP port, which has been replaced with the highly anticipated PCI-Express bus. And on most boards, even the fairly recent adoption of DDR memory support by the Pentium lineup, has been dropped in favor of DDR2 support.
