Budget All-round PC - October 2015

The all-round PC is a PC with comprehensive features for around £650 - £750 that can do a little bit of everything. It should have enough speed and capacity to meet your needs for some time. Currently it can run all applications, and you're able to upgrade it with small future investments when you need more power or storage capacity.

Surfing, gaming, business applications, photo and video editing should all be possible on the all-round PC without giving you the feeling that it's lacking in performance.

This means a fast processor and graphics card with an excellent price/ performance ratio, in combination with more than enough memory and storage space. Let's not forget a good computer case and a power supply that will remain energy efficient and silent enough for some years to come. Since the monitor, mouse and keyboard will be used daily you should definitely not skimp on these peripherals.

ECS Z170 Claymore Motherboard Review

Earlier this year, it was reported that Elitegroup Computer System (ECS) was no longer going to market its own branded motherboards, instead they were going to focus on OEM motherboards. While OEM system builds has been ECS’s main focus for many years, they have released products for the DIY crowd, with high end features while keeping the price down. With increased pressure from the top tier motherboard manufacturers, these budget minded motherboards often get overlooked. However, if you look at the features ECS builds into their motherboards, these budget boards are sometimes a great option.

G.SKILL Ripjaws SV710 Virtual 7.1 Headset Review

Quality seems to be put into most of the design, but there are a few flaws. The most fatal flaw is the suspension pad. Being designed so high and not adjustable makes it uncomfortable for most people to wear these as they will want to slide down. This is a fatal flaw that potentially ruins an otherwise decent headset. If they sit right they are very comfortable, but if they slide down due to lack of contact with the suspension pad they get uncomfortable fast. While the suspension pad is designed for larger heads the ear cups are not so oversized. The audio controller can potentially reach the floor – it easily did in my case even with the chair at its maximum height. There are no clips or any other means to attach the controller to anything so it is very easy to lose it, or accidentally step on it and turn the volume up. This leads into the next issue, not necessarily a con: the maximum volume is insanely high on these headsets. Using the plus and minus buttons causes a huge jump (2% jumps in Windows volume level is like low-medium-high in real life, there is no fine adjustment). I could put ear plugs in and it was very loud at 100% -- this isn't necessarily a con as it can be nice to have the power to drown out exterior noises but would it be too much to have a setting to lower the sound levels?

How to prevent Windows 10 November update from getting stuck during installation

On November 12th, Microsoft finally began rolling out the first major update for Windows 10. The Windows 10 November update includes a bunch of new features and changes that surely will improve the overall experience of the operating system. The November update brings improvements to the Start menu to allow users to have a fourth column of tiles, updated context menus throughout the operating system, and Cortana gets smarter with handwriting recognition and missed call notifications. The Microsoft Edge browser also gets performance and security improvements and tab preview, and a lot more. (I'll recommend you read our previous roundup of features, improvements, and features new to the November update.) Now, while the software giant expects the roll out to go smoothly, it's just a matter of time until we start seeing isolated issues. For example, there have been reports in the Microsoft Answer forums that there seems to be a bug that can prevent the Windows 10 November update from completing the installation.

Patriot Viper 4 DDR4-3400 8GB Memory Kit Review

Earlier this year we took a look at our first Viper 4 DDR4 memory kit from Patriot. That kit was a quad-channel kit designed for the X99 platform. Now that Intel’s Z170 chipset is here we have dual-channel DDR4 which we’ve seen to be more stable at higher frequencies. Patriot has sent us one of their latest Viper 4 DDR4 kits which is an 8GB dual-channel kit that runs at 3400 MHz! With official timings of 16-18-18-36 at 1.35V the PV48G340C6K kit is set to perform quite well on Z170 systems. On top of the fast speeds the memory kit features a custom-designed heatspreader that is black and red that will match many popular motherboards out there.
