AMD officially announces new FreeSync 2 tech

AMD FreeSync technology was focused on refresh rates, and with over 20 partners and 121 monitors available with FreeSync support, AMD was quite keen to note how FreeSync is both "better" and more widely adopted compared to Nvidia G-Sync technology. The newly announced FreeSync 2 technology will focus on HDR, bringing much lower HDR latency to gamers.  
The HDR or "high dynamic range" is the next big thing and can be used on both SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR-capable monitors, but suffers from high input lag, something that AMD will change with the FreeSync 2 technology.
Currently, the HDR rendering is a two stage process where after game tone mapping is done, it is sent to the monitor via HDR or SDR transport and then determine if the display tone mapping is compatible with the monitor.

Aorus Z270X Gaming 5 Motherboard Review

Skylake was arguably one of the most anticipated processors of 2015, so much in fact that there were worldwide shortages of the Core i7 6700K and a slew of new motherboards which started some rather edgy trends. I tried to get a 6700K at launch but, were completely sold out in the states and online price gouging reached global proportions as demand for the CPU rose. As a result I settled on the Core i5 6600K for the Z170 generation and rather enjoyed it. Overclocking was much better due to changes in the CPU architecture and I only broke one due to the thin(ner than it should be) CPU PCB. The successor to Skylake, Kaby Lake, has proven that there is still excitement for new processor architectures even if the changes are rather incremental.

In this review I’ll be looking at the new Aorus Z270X Gaming 5 motherboard by Gigabyte. The Aorus brand has been with Gigabyte for several years and has since become the brand name for premium Gigabyte gaming notebooks and PC accessories. It would seem they have taken the next logical setup and finally included motherboards, the core of any gaming PC, into the Aorus family.

Asus ROG Strix Z270F Gaming Review

The first Z270 hits the labs. Today marks the official launch of Intel's 7th Generation Core 'Kaby Lake' desktop processors and the accompanying 270-series chipsets. As you will probably have gathered from our review of the chip a month ago, nothing of note has changed on the CPU side of things. The multimedia engine, meanwhile, has been updated to support the latest standards and codecs.

A lack of meaningful change can actually be a good thing in some ways. These new chips use the LGA1151 socket familiar on recent Skylake- and Broadwell-based motherboards. The EZVIZ Mini Plus HD 1080p WiFi home security camera offers surprisingly good performance, and the image quality is second to none when compared to other 1080p cameras I have seen. You can manage your video clips in the cloud, which some people may prefer, but I like the fact that you can also record them locally. While I would prefer to have the ability to record the camera feed to a networked device, the inclusion of a microSD card slot gives me some control back.

Worth spending more on Z270? We find out. Hot on the heels of the Intel Z270 launch are a number of motherboards from the usual industry names. Asus and MSI have already had their mainstream boards dissected, so now it is the turn of Gigabyte, who chose to seed a higher-spec board - the Z270X-Gaming 7 being the particular flavour of choice.

Hold on a second, you might say, as this is no Gigabyte board. You'd be mostly wrong but just a little right. Sweep back over the image and notice the lack of Gigabyte branding. Instead, what you see is Aorus emblazoned over the huge heatsink to the left of the CPU socket and on the meaty bridge heatsink. What gives?

Intel 7th Generation Core i7 7700K Processor Review

As an overclocking enabled Core series processor, the i7 7700K does indeed have some overclocking chops. A baseline 4.2GHz clock speed is pretty solid for the average person, but running at close to 5GHz is really stellar. The last processor I had that came anywhere close with reasonable voltages applied was a 2600K. Now, getting anywhere close over the past few generations of Intel processors was fraught with temperatures that could not be contained with anything less than a full-on water cooling system under load when you started cranking on the voltage. I was surprised, pleasantly at this point, that even running at 5GHz was possible with an AIO cooling solution. I was able to keep this processor at 4950MHz under a Prime95 load for hours without hitting temperatures that would throttle the processor speed. By using 1.36v applied in the BIOS, and tuning the rest of the voltage manually, the maximum temperature I hit was 94 °C with an AIO. Now, you can always tune for higher speeds by using the AVX offset in the BIOS, but I am happy with where this chip went. The performance and overclocking capabilities of Kaby Lake are a refreshing change of pace from the hot running chips of previous generations.

Intel Core i7-7700K “Kaby Lake” Processor Review

Kaby Lake has is officially here! We have been talking about Kaby Lake for the past few months and today Intel makes it official with the release of the S-Series desktop processors.  Typically when Intel releases desktop processors they would go by the "tick-tock" method wherein a "tick" would represent a new node and a "tock" would represent a new architecture.  Intel officially killed off "tick-tock" earlier this year and has moved to a three year cadence in which we'll see process -> architecture -> optimization.  For 14nm we've seen "Broadwell", then "Skylake" with the new architecture, and now finally we are on the optimization phase which is "Kaby Lake".  The optimization phase according to Intel is a direct result of transistor-level enhancements.  We can think of "Kaby Lake" much like "Devil's Canyon" chip was to the i7-4770K.  While still on the same 14nm process, architecture, and TDP Intel is able to more performance out of the "Kaby Lake" chips.  The flagship processor, the Core i7-7700K (4-core, 8-thread) which we are taking a look at today has a base clock of 4.2 GHz and boosts all the way up to 4.5 GHz.  That is compared to the 4.0 GHz base and 4.2 GHz boost of the Skylake Core i7-6700K.  Read along as we see what Intel's latest desktop processor is all about!

Though you'd think it is an all new chip, it is merely a respin seen from Skylake, meaning both series processors are Socket 1151. This also means that IF you are in the market for a new series 7000 processor, your H170 or Z170 motherboard can be compatible with Kaby Lake after a motherboard BIOS upgrade. The new series Kaby Lake processors are fairly energy efficient, still as powerful as they have been for years. If you are interested in new technologies like Intel Optane, you will however need to upgrade to a Z270 and H270 range motherboard. In this review we test the Core i5 7600K. An unlocked Kaby Lake processor that has four cores and a slim 91W TDP, similar to Skylake TDP wise, once again a processor fabbed on the 14nm fabrication process.

MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon Review

Looking good in all respects. MSI is facing the same opportunities and challenges that are present for every manufacturer of Z270 chipset-based motherboards. On the one hand, enthusiasts that already have the Z170 are likely to find few reasons to upgrade, while anyone new to the desktop platform should gravitate to the new chipset but may be wary due to the higher cost than similar Z170 motherboards already on the market.

MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon Review

As time goes by technology improves as evidenced with Intel now releasing the "Kaby Lake" processors as part of their "Tick-Tock" release model. With new CPUs, new motherboards will follow and today I will be reviewing the MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon paired with the latest Intel CPU – the Intel I7-7700!

Using the aforementioned Intel release model, Kaby Lake would be considered a "Tick", but it is still manufactured on a 14 nm fabrication node. Kaby Lake is however built with design enhancements that Intel refers to as 14 nm+, intended to increase overall efficiency and allow for higher clock rates. The i7-7700 has a lower base clock but an equal turbo boost frequency compared to the prior-generation i7-6700K: with 3600 MHz vs 4000 MHz base core frequency, while both have 4000 MHz maximum turbo frequency with all four cores loaded, respectively.

The i7-7700K will be even faster than the i7-7700 that we have for testing. Kaby Lake's main benefit over Intel's older Sky Lake for desktops will be for overclocking. Many early reports show it should be fairly easy to reach up to 5 GHz with the i7-7700K when paired with a decent cooling solution such as an all-in-one liquid cooling kit. Integrated graphics performance was improved upon greatly as well, maintaining the prior GPU architecture but adding features such as VP9 codec and 4K playback support. Mobile and low-profile system users will enjoy this, but most gamers will not likely notice the improvements because of the widespread use of dedicated graphics cards.

As we plow through our many Z270 motherboards reviews we have looked at budget, mainstream but also we need to look at high-end the enthusiast class. That's where we meet the MSI Z270 XPOWER GAMING Titanium. A breathtaking motherboard with metal colored coating, extra overclock features, DDR4 boost functions not one, not two but three M.2. slots and just so much more. Titanium edition - it probably is the most interesting looking motherboard released ever thanks to a new PCB coating. Combined with a few extra's and an overall high class build MSI might have a true winner here. A motherboard that promises to deliver a high amount of features and provide that Sky- or Kaby Lake processor the full infrastructure is needs for a kick-ass gaming PC.
