8 things Microsoft gets criticised for (but not Apple or Google)

Microsoft has been around for over 40 years and has seen some of the biggest industry changes first-hand. In that time, the company has made friends and enemies, been sued by governments, and sold billions of products. Apple and Google have a similar story, albeit over a shorter period of time for the latter. But there is one aspect in which these companies differ: Microsoft is often unfairly criticised for things which the other two companies also do. The reasons for this are varied – some go way back to when Microsoft aggressively fought for the PC and internet markets in the late 1990s, for example – and are certainly worth exploring.

ASUS ROG Strix GL702VT 17.3in Gaming Notebook Review

Only a few years ago, powerful 17in gaming notebooks were really only “laptops” by classification. If you tried to use one on your lap, your legs would suffer third degree burns and your feet would eventually fall off due to restricted blood circulation. But at least the experience would be short lived, because the battery life would be so short. These days, though, a serious 17in gaming laptop is much more worthy of its classification, and ASUS’s ROG Strix GL702VT is a case in point.

ASUS STRIX GAMING GTX 1070 OC Graphics Card Review

Aftermarket GTX 1070 models typically start around the £380 mark which is a substantial saving compared to the GTX 1080. Unfortunately, NVIDIA’s premium solutions remain extremely expensive and recent price rises in the UK haven’t helped matters. As a result, many enthusiasts are unable to afford the GTX 1080 and even if they can, struggle to justify a £600+ investment. This is especially the case when rumours circulate regarding the GTX 1080Ti being prepared and the possible performance gains. Saying that, it’s highly unlikely NVIDIA will unveil a faster graphics card within a similar price bracket judging by the Titan X’s recent launch. Evidently, the GTX 1070 is a more sensible option unless you’re using a 4K display.

It’s important to remember that the devaluation of Sterling has resulted in wild pricing fluctuations and I’m expecting further price rises in the next quarter as the retail stock is purchased at a lower exchange rate. Therefore, it’s probably a good idea to consider upgrading your hardware relatively soon and examine the current offerings. ASUS’ STRIX GAMING range has received widespread acclaim from reviewers and rightfully so given the astounding build quality. Not only that, the company’s graphics cards feature gorgeous RGB lighting and allow you directly cool the GPU with case fans. This is an ingenious idea and makes sense given the GPU’s higher thermal loads.

Cryorig A80 280mm Hybrid Air and AIO CPU Cooler Review

Cryorig has won many awards for their high-end air cooling products, pushing the limits of what is possible for air cooling and delivering some of the best aesthetics the market has ever seen. Now they’re turning their cooling abilities to the world of AIO water coolers, and today we have their top model, the A80 Ultimate, a 280mm hybrid AIO that is sure to help you take command of your CPU, even when pushing high-end overclocks.

The problem with AIO coolers is that they take the heat from the CPU and move it to the edge of the case and blow the heat through the radiator with fans, this is great for the CPU, however, it means that your motherboard and surrounding components don’t get the same kind of airflow they would with an air cooler. Air coolers move air around the socket a lot more than an AIO. Cryorig thinks that they have the solution, as their A-series cooler have an extra fan above the pump that helps keep everything cooler, and could improve system stability, especially when overclocking.
