January 7, 2020, update for Office 2016 (KB4484168)

Improvements and fixes

The new commenting experience is available only in subscription versions of Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint 2016 users will be able to work with these comments by using PowerPoint on the Web. This update adds a business bar notification to let users know that a file contains comments that they can't access in PowerPoint 2016. We recommend that users open the file in PowerPoint on the Web to work with these comments.

The business bar works as follows:
  • The business bar shows that a file that has modern comments was opened, or that comments were added by co-authors while the user has the file open.
  • The business bar gives users options to save the file as a cloud file if it isn't already, and to open the file in a browser to get the new commenting experience.
Additionally, the Document Inspector is updated as follows:
  • If users opt to delete comments while they are running Document Inspector, all comments are deleted as expected.
  • If users opt to anonymize a document that has modern comments, they are informed that they can't anonymize the comments but can use the Document Inspector to remove the comments from the document.
Note To enable this improvement, you must install update  4484216 together with this update.
