An Interview with AMD’s Forrest Norrod: Naples, Rome, Milan, & Genoa

There’s no getting away from the fact that AMD’s big revenue potential exists in the server space. While the glitz and the glamor is all about the Ryzen, the big money is with EPYC. Heading up AMD’s EPYC efforts, as well as their extended collaborations in the embedded and semi-custom segments, is Forrest Norrod, the SVP and GM of the Datacenter and Embedded Solutions Group at AMD. We spent some time at Computex talking with Forrest about the upcoming premise of Rome, and how AMD now sees itself in the server and enterprise ecosystem.

Official Overclocking: Intel's Performance Maximizer reviewed

PC enthusiasts have been overclocking their hardware since before I owned a PC. At the risk of sounding like an old person, I had to move jumpers around on my Shuttle HOT-555A to get that Socket 7's motherboard to run its front-side bus at 83 MHz instead of 66. That took my Pentium MMX 166 MHz up to 207 MHz. The prevailing thought among enthusiasts seemed to be "why not overclock? It's free performance." The process was a little intimidating to me at first, and many average PC users either didn't know about it or were afraid to mess with the default settings. Fast forward a few years and motherboards started to make things easier. Abit's KT7  was the first motherboard I can think of that had a jumper-free overclocking experience. You could press a hotkey at boot time and mess around with voltages and bus timings right on your PC monitor.

Team Group XCalibur Phantom Gaming RGB 16GB DDR4-3200 (TF8D416G3200HC16CDC01) Review

We see if the new DDR4-3200 kit makes sense. Price reductions for DDR4 ICs, and memory in general, have been welcome news for the industry. Looking at system RAM in particular, it's now possible to buy 16GB of DDR4-3,000 memory for £65, which is about half the cost as at the turn of the year.

Such pricing puts those companies interested in producing RGB-laden RAM into something of a quandary; they cannot charge too much more for the light-infused technology when the base cost is so low. It's to this backdrop that Team Group intros the XCalibur Phantom Gaming modules.
